Frett's basket helps Pirates ground Rockets

Wirth on the money with 15 points, 3 steals

Emily Wirth finished with a team-high 15 points, five rebounds and three steals as Pewaukee endured a late charge from South Milwaukee to take a 54-44 win Tuesday on the road.

Senior Hannah Frett buried a crucial jumper after the Rockets had pulled within 3 points, a pull-up shot from 10 feet away that gave the Pirates the breathing room they needed.

"They've got three kids that are 6-foot-1, and they just keep rotating them," said Pewaukee coach Todd Hansen. "Their guards are very quick, quicker than the film would show. We had the lead and they whittled it down, but one of our seniors made the key play."

Pewaukee (7-1 overall, 6-1 in Woodland Conference) held a lead as large as 14 in the third quarter, but the advantage was 7 by the start of the fourth and a mere 45-42 with 2:30 to play. The count was 48-44 when Frett hit the shot to make it a 6-point game. Frett scored 6 of her 8 points in the fourth quarter, and Wirth notched 9 of her 15 in the second half.

Natalie Wood scored 6 points and added four rebounds. Shannon Kalamarz had three rebounds and three steals.

Jordyn Swan, the sixth-leading scorer in the conference, finished with 12 points.
