Perfect Pirates spread out South Milwaukee
Series of road tests await unbeaten Pirates
Matt Dabney and the Pewaukee boys basketball team nursed a small lead most of the night, but extended it in the later stages of the game on Tuesday, stopping South Milwaukee in a Woodland Conference game, 56-44.
Pewaukee held a 6-point lead at halftime and a two-possession advantage at the end of the third quarter before the Pirates coaching staff decided to spread the floor and look for easy baskets while burning time off the clock.
"The guys did a real nice job moving the ball in the fourth quarter," Pewaukee coach Tim Reuter said. "We had five layups in the fourth quarter by spreading the floor."
Dabney had one of the better basketball games of his prep career. He scored 17 points while pulling down seven rebounds for Pewaukee (8-0 overall, 7-0 in Woodland Conference).
Tyler Hanson had 8 points and five assists. Pat Bacon had 11 points, and Mike Olewinski and Tony Trahan each scored 8 points.
David Reese was a factor all evening, disturbing the Rockets' offense. He finished with six steals.
"Dave Reese has been pesky on defense for us this season, getting his hands on passes and tipping balls away," Reuter said.
Nine players scored for the undefeated Pirates, who hit the road for five straight games, including a nonconference game at Slinger on Dec. 30. With New Berlin West's loss Friday, the Pirates have a two-game lead in the Woodland Blue Division.
