AHS girls hoops team stays hot

The roll continued last Friday night for Arrowhead's varsity girls basketball team.

Playing at Waukesha North in a Classic 8 Conference game, the 10th-ranked Warhawks took the lead on its second possession of the game and never looked back, scoring an easy 53-36 victory over the Northstars.

The win, the eighth in a row for AHS, improved them to 12-2 on the season and 9-1 in league play. The Warhawks are tied for first place with Milwaukee Pius with four games remaining in the conference. Mukwonago and Kettle Moraine are tied for third with 5-5 marks.

Friday's win marked the 17th straight time the Warhawks have defeated North. The last time they lost to them was Feb. 17, 2003.

"We got off to a good start and that pretty much set the tone for the game," said Arrowhead coach Heidi Hamilton. "We're playing our best basketball right now. We got a lot of good minutes from a lot of kids tonight."

Arrowhead jumped out to a 12-6 lead after the first period and then stretched that advantage to 27-11 at halftime.

Senior Jenny Smith had another big game for the Warhawks. The 6-foot-2 center poured in 25 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Smith was a perfect 7 for 7 from the free-throw line.

"Jenny is really playing well for us," Hamilton said. "This is her fourth year with us on the varsity, and she's doing an outstanding job. She's getting good looks and making her shots. The other girls are doing a good job of getting her the ball."

For the night, the Warhawks made a season-best 14 of 15 foul shots.

North (8-8, 2-8), got a big game from freshman Jessica Kelliher. She finished with 18 points, seven rebounds and six steals. Sophomore Elizabeth Kelliher had eight points and five blocked shots.

AHS will host nonconference foe Germantown (5-8) on Tuesday night.
