Arrowhead swimmers win 11th straight title
Winning conference championships almost gets taken for granted by the Arrowhead varsity boys swim team. It's been that way since the first year of the Classic 8 Conference, back in 1998.
Swimming at Waukesha South in the combined Classic 8/Greater Metro Conference meet, the No. 2 ranked Warhawks (state coaches poll) rolled over the competition, winning the championship with a whopping 673 points. Brookfield, ranked ninth, was a distant second with 341 points. Waukesha South/Catholic Memorial, second-place finishers in the same meet one year ago, was third in the field of nine teams with 295 tallies.
The conference championship was the 11th straight for the Warhawks and 12th in the 15-year history of the Classic 8. AHS won the first title in 1998 and then finished second to Waukesha West/Mukwonago the next three years. Since 2002, the Warhawks haven't lost.
"We had outstanding performances right across the board," said coach Bob Jenkyns. "We always gear up for this meet. It's the start of the championship season, but now we have to get ready for the sectionals and then state. That's what we want more than anything."
Arrowhead won 7 of 12 events. The Warhawks not only won all of those races but also set two new meet records in the process.
Senior Evan Barta defended his title in the 100-yard backstroke by setting a new conference meet record of 51.46. That eclipsed the oldest conference in the meet, a time of 51.49 set by Arrowhead's Ted Krueger in 1998.
AHS also set a new record in winning the 200 freestyle relay. The combination of Jake Prodoehl, Logan Kozlik, Kyle Wenger and Barta won with a time of 1:27.53. They won that race by two seconds.
Prodoehl had a big day, winning both of his individual events and swimming on two winning relays. Prodoehl won the 50 freestyle (21.55) and then captured the 100 freestyle (47.21) a few races later.
The final individual winner for the Warhawks was Wenger. The AHS junior captured the 200 freestyle at 1:45.26.
Prodoehl helped the 400 freestyle relay wrap up the meet in winning style as he teamed up with Kozlik, Wenger and Barta to win in a time of 3:14.10.
AHS swept all three relays, closing with a victory in the 200 medley relay. The team of Matt Ahnen, Ignacio Ayoroa, Alex Avgoulas and John Warren were clocked at 1:40.94.
"This is the time of the year that all of our swimmers wait for each season," Jenkyns said. "We work hard in the offseason and during the year to get ready for the state meet. Now is the time we want to be at our best."
Arrowhead will swim in the Nicolet sectional on Saturday.
North/KM sixth
The Waukesha North/Kettle Moraine co-op took sixth place among nine schools with a score of 212.
Greg Geanon took fifth place in the butterfly, swimming 57.39.
He also teamed with Simon Hensen, Will Lewis and Keenan Acken to take fifth in the medley relay at 1:48.83. Hensen and Geanon are both sophomores, while Lewis and Acken are juniors.
Hensen took seventh in the individual medley and backstroke, Acken took eighth in the 100 free, and Nolan Fahey took eighth in the 500 free.
