KM clinches hockey crown
The Kettle Moraine/Mukwonago/Oconomowoc varsity boys hockey team has captured the outright championship in the Classic 8 Conference on Saturday, topping visiting Catholic Memorial/Milwaukee Pius at Naga-Waukee Ice Center, 7-3.
The victory improved the No. 9-ranked Lasers (state coaches poll) to 18-3 on the season. That's the second-best record in team history through 21 games.
The win also gave Kettle Moraine the outright conference championship with a 6-0 record. Brookfield finished second at 5-1, and Arrowhead was third at 4-2.
KM/MHS/OHS wasted little time getting started against CMH/Pius, scoring three goals in the first period to take an early 3-2 lead. The Lasers added one goal in the second period and three more in the final stanza.
For the night, the Lasers fired 40 shots on goal, 12 more than the Crusaders. KM goalie Quinn Disrud saved 25 of 28 shots. Kettle Moraine senior Justin Yute finished with three goals and added one assist, giving him 4 points for the night. Others getting one goal each were Michael Del Vecchio, Jake Erdman, Mitch Ellena and Jimmie Rice.
Greg Simandl, Matt Sherry, Erdman and Connor Moran had two assists each and Yute had one.
Yute and Simandl are tied for the team lead in points with 35 each. Del Vecchio is next with 33 points.
The Lasers have two more games left in the regular season. On Tuesday, they play at Wisconsin Dells and on Saturday they will entertain Homestead at Naga-Waukee at 6:45 p.m. Homestead is ranked eighth in the state.
