Lasers find offense, win title

KM wins twice to capture tournament crown

Maybe the Kettle Moraine/Mukwonago/Oconomowoc boys hockey team doesn't have to be concerned about its offense, after all.

Playing in the championship game of its own four-school Turkey Shootout at the Naga-Waukee Ice Arena on Saturday, the Lasers had no trouble scoring as they rolled to an easy 5-0 victory over Cedarburg to win the Shootout championship. The locals scored two goals in the first and third periods to win the game going away.

Going into the season, the main concern for fifth-year Kettle Moraine coach John Brymer was replacing high-scoring forwards Justin Yute and Michael Del Vecchio, who both graduated last June. The Lasers lost about 70 percent of it scoring through graduation.

"We're not going to see one guy overpower anybody or two guys like we did last year," Brymer said after the championship game. "But this year the goals are going to have to come from a big support staff. We have some good players back on offense and that will help, but so far I like what I see. A lot of guys are chipping in and playing well."

The Lasers advanced to the championship game by stopping Mosinee on Friday night in the semifinals, 3-0. Cedarburg earned a berth in the finals by defeating Appleton on Friday, 3-2. Mosinee took third place on Saturday by edging Appleton, 4-3.

KM/MHS/OHS is now 2-0 on the season. It's the first time they've won their first two games of the year since the 2007-08 season.

Lasers win title

KM/MHS/OHS wasted little time taking charge in the championship game on Saturday, scoring the game's first goal just two minutes into the action. Junior forward Robbie Dombrowski picked up a nice pass from senior Matt Sherry and then fired the puck into the right corner of the net. From there, the Lasers were off and rolling.

Junior Jonathan Carfagna scored the first of his two goals for the day with 3:27 remaining in the opening period to stake his team to a 2-0 lead after the first period.

"It's always nice to start quick." Brymer added. "That's the message we send to the boys. Start quick, get something done, play physical and when you get the opportunities put them away. Get the lead and build on it. The game then should shake out the way it's planned. It doesn't go like that all the time, but today it did."

Carfagna scored the only goal of the second period when he connected on a power play with 10:10 remaining in the period. Senior Greg Simandl assisted on that score.

Leading 3-0 going into the final stanza, Simandl, the Most Valuable Player of the Shootout, took charge for the Lasers. He scored on a power play just 16 seconds into the penalty with Austin Freeman and Sam Hart sharing the assist. Simandl then closed out the scoring when he hit the back of the Cedarburg net with just 2:59 to play. Sherry had the assist on that goal.

"We have a lot of young guys this year and a couple of upperclassmen and everyone is working as a team right now," Simandl said. "We've got a big defense in the back and that helps a lot. Plus, I think our offense is going to be solid. I think we've got a pretty good team again this year."

Senior goalie Quinn Disrud finished the game with 17 saves, including two key saves early in the game when Cedarburg was on the power play. He preserved his second straight shutout by making two other solid saves early in the final period. Drew Fuller, Connor Freeman, Hart and Sherry also played well on defense.

KM blanks Mosinee

Simandl fired in two of his team's three goals and Zach Thoreson had the other goal against Mosinee. Luke Steidl, Austin Freeman and Sherry had assists for the winners.

Disrud turned back all 28 shots he faced.
