Lutzen, Pewaukee boys hold off Eisenhower
Pewaukee junior Eric Lutzen lifted the Pirates boys basketball team to victory over visiting New Berlin Eisenhower on Tuesday, 59-55.
Lutzen scored 14 points and pulled down 16 rebounds while in the giving mood, dishing out five assists for the Pirates, now 4-2 on the young season.
"Lutzen was a monster," Pewaukee head boys basketball coach Mike Basile said. "It seemed like he was able to get any rebound we needed when we needed it tonight. With their pressure, he helped us by giving us that needed inside presence. I thought we stood a little bit too much offensively, but Eric was there and simply outstanding."
After Eisenhower leading scorer Reed Timmer, made a conventional 3-point play with 12 seconds remaining in the game to cut Pewaukee's advantage to one possession, 58-55, the Lions quickly fouled. Senior David Girmscheid missed his first free throw but knocked down the second, putting the game away for Pewaukee.
Timmer finished the game with 29 points, going 10 for 11 at the free-throw line, with most of them coming late in the game. Basile thought his crew held one of the state's top scorers in check until the fourth quarter.
"Timmer's a tough kid that hits some big shots, but I thought early on we contained him and that kept us in the game," Basile said.
John Conroy added 12 points for Pewaukee. Girmscheid and Jordan Hass each scored 9.
