Newman makes history for SJNMA

Jordan Newman appeared to be on a collision course with Hunter Colden of Brodhead/Juda in the state semifinals, and by the end of the WIAA Division 2 state tournament, the St. John's Northwestern Military Academy senior did, in fact, defeat Colden, 10-4.

The problem was it didn't come in the expected forum, but it still was a momentous occasion of Newman and SJNMA. Both Newman and Colden were defeated by Jordan Pardowsky of Luxemburg-Casco, so when Newman topped Colden in the third-place match, he had a bronze medal and the first-ever podium finish for SJNMA.

Newman finished the year 37-1. He had an early 4-2 lead on Pardowsky in his 170-pound quarterfinal first match Friday at the Kohl Center in Madison, but Pardowsky ultimately scored a 12-5 win. Newman stayed strong in the back draw, recording a tech fall, a 5-0 win over Clay Fitzpatrick of Viroqua and finally the win for third place.

"Obviously, we were disappointed with our performance in the quarterfinal match," St. John's coach Paul Havel said. "We knew it would be a tough match, as all matches at state are. Jordan came out and wrestled well in the first period, led 4-2. I felt he may have spent too much energy riding in the first period. Pardowsky is a solid wrestler, as he made it to the finals.

"I was very proud of the way he came back through and won his next three matches and took third. None of those matches were easy, and defeating Fitzpatrick and Colden back-to-back was no easy task. He dominated those matches."

He finished his career 101-23, clearing the 100-win plateau with the victory over Fitzpatrick. He's thought to be the first SJNMA wrestler to reach the century mark.

Pewaukee wrestlers fall

Pewaukee senior Alex Owens (29-17) fell to Dalton Gorman of Mosinee in the first round at 132 pounds, 9-2. Owens finishes his career with 113 victories, seventh on the all-time PHS list. He became the school's 16th two-time state qualifier.

"His leadership and dedication will positively impact our program for years to come," Pewaukee coach Ed Kurth said.

Junior Rajiv Geffert (31-17) lost to Adams-Friendship freshman Trenton McManus at 106 pounds, 9-4. Neither Geffert nor Owens received a wrestleback.

"Rajiv was able to take an early 2-1 lead and held a 4-3 lead in the third period before McManus was able to shoot in for a takedown and catch Geffert on his back for two extra nearfall points," Kurth said. "That suddenly put him ahead 7-3. Rajiv escaped to pull to within 3 points, but a late desperation throw didn't work and he lost by a final score of 9-4."

McManus eventually placed sixth, and Kurth pointed to the notable third-place finish of Joseph Nguyen of St. Lawrence Seminary. Nguyen finished the year with just one loss on his record, and Geffert had a second-period lead on Nguyen in the sectional semifinal.

"These are very encouraging signs for next year when Rajiv will most likely return to the 106-pound weight class," Kurth said.
