OT faceoff leads to walkoff win
Moments into overtime on Tuesday at the Mullett Ice Center, the host Arrowhead Warhawks were about to celebrate victory. A few seconds later, they actually did.
Arrowhead's varsity girls ice hockey team defeated the Kettle Moraine Glacier, 2-1, getting a little revenge against the state's seventh-ranked team. Kettle Moraine had skated off winners against the Warhawks in their first two meetings.
An apparent goal was waved off by the referee on a scrum in front of the Kettle Moraine crease at the 6:38 mark of overtime. On the ensuing face-off, freshman forward Makenna Thomas rifled a shot past Kettle Moraine goalie Jenna Bales, giving her team the winning margin.
"The girls acknowledged it went in; Kettle Moraine's coaches (Brian Smith and Rob Perry) said that it went in," Arrowhead varsity girls ice hockey coach Jinelle Siergiej said. "It hit the pad. Anyway, I guess it's better to score two goals in overtime then none."
On the game-ending-play, senior Rachel Martell and junior Kara Olsen had assists.
"I thought Rachel Martell had an excellent game tonight," Siergiej said.
In the third period, Kettle Moraine (15-5-0 overall and 7-4-0 in the Eastern Shores Conference) tied the game on a fancy spin-around goal from Maddie Benz, assisted by Trinity Robinson.
Arrowhead (12-5-1, 6-2-1) got the first goal of the night with Olsen scoring from the left wing with 3:36 remaining in the second period. Kettle Moraine goalie Jenna Bales got a glove on it, but it caromed in.
"It's a healthy rivalry," Siergiej said. "For us, it's like playing against USM. They do stuff together in the offseason, so it's fun for them to compete against each other."
Arrowhead sophomore goalie Hannah Nicholson had 19 saves. Bales tallied 17.
"It was a good game against two good teams," Smith said. "We had the fortune of coming out on top the first two times we played them. This time, the puck bounced their way."
Both teams skate against Beaver Dam next, with Arrowhead on the road Thursday and Kettle Moraine hosting at The Ponds in Brookfield on Friday.
