Pewaukee/Eisenhower game was a treasure
Last Saturday night, once again I was reminded why high school sports are so wonderful. For just a $3 admission, more than one thousand girls basketball fans were treated to a highly competitive and entertaining Woodland Conference game between No. 2-ranked and undefeated New Berlin Eisenhower and the 13th-ranked host Pewaukee Pirates.
Prior to the game, the contest was being billed as the game of the year in the conference and perhaps the area. The two schools have two of the best Division 2 teams and programs in this part of the state, and certainly the game lived up to all that hype, and even more.
Playing in the sparkling new Pewaukee facility, which just happens to be arguably the best basketball venue in the county, the atmosphere was brilliant from the opening tip until the final seconds ticked off the clock in the second overtime. The two teams battled through four quarters of regulation play and two four-minute overtimes before Eisenhower finally emerged the winner.
But while the Lions left the court with a 75-68 victory to remain perfect on the season, the underdog Pirates proved a point to not only themselves, but to everyone else: they can compete with any other Division 2 team in the state.
The game, which featured eight lead changes, had the fans of both teams on their feet plenty of times. In the end, the Lions made a few more big shots and a few more big plays that put them over the top.
Eisenhower hit a 3-pointer near the end of regulation that forced the first overtime. It was an instant replay of that big shot in the first overtime when the Lions nailed another late 3-pointer to force the second extra session. Unfortunately for the Pirates, with standout Emily Wirth on the bench after fouling out in the first OT, nothing went right for Pewaukee in the second overtime.
However, in the end, it was a great night of high school basketball and entertainment for the loyal fans from both schools. I've been saying it for years. There's nothing better than high school sports. It doesn't matter the game. The experience for both the athletes and fans is outstanding.
Where else can you go on a Friday or Saturday night and spend just $4 and enjoy a sporting event and even a bag of popcorn.
I'll tell you where. No place!
Notes from the Lake Country
The WIAA high school wrestling regionals will take place this Saturday as the local grapplers eye berths in the individual state tournament and teams take a shot at advancing to the state team tournament. Arrowhead and Pewaukee appear to have good shots at winning regional team titles, which advances them to the team sectionals Tuesday.
Swimming sectionals also will take place this Saturday. Under coach Bob Jenkyns, perennial state powerhouse Arrowhead appears to be in a very good position to not only win the Nicolet sectional, but also to make a serious run at winning the Division 1 state championship. AHS has captured six team state titles since 1995 and has won 47 individual or relay races over the years.
The Kettle Moraine/Mukwonago/Oconomowoc varsity boys hockey team captured the Classic 8 Conference championship last Saturday night by defeating Catholic Memorial/Pius at the Naga-Waukee Ice Arena. Last Saturday's victory improved the No. 8 ranked Lasers to 18-3 on the season, the second-best mark in school history. The Lasers, seeded first in the sectional, should make a serious run at advancing to the state meet later this month.
