Pirates boys remain tied for first place
Pewaukee grabs Woodland win over Brown Deer
Pewaukee got a head start against Brown Deer on Tuesday. The Falcons nearly caught up before the Pirates found their second wind.
First-quarter highlights came courtesy of senior forward Jordan Edgerson, who scored the first four points of the game. Senior guard Austin Hansen knocked down a three-pointer and a basket by sophomore forward Eric Lutzen was the end result on a fancy pass from senior guard John Czerwinski.
At quarter's end, the Pirates had a 22-11 lead, and they would extend it to as much as 17 points at 28-11 with 5:20 to play before halftime when Edgerson canned a 15-foot jump shot on an assist from senior forward Ben Steker.
The Pirates had only three turnovers and led at the break, 37-24.
"We did an excellent job on offense in the first half," Pewaukee head boys basketball coach Tim Reuter said. "We moved the ball real well. Plus we made shots, and when you make shots, your look better."
But Brown Deer didn't go quietly, chipping away at the Pirates' lead in the third quarter. After back-to-back three-pointers by Falcons senior guard Donald Harmon, the road team had cut the deficit to one possession at 45-42.
"They're a team that's got a ton of talent out there, so you know at some time during the game, they'll make a run," Reuter said. "But we sustained it, made some nice plays and finished the game real well."
Pewaukee doubled up Brown Deer, 20-10, in the fourth quarter.
Kray Bradley had 15 points and seven assists for the Pirates (13-5 overall, 11-3 in the Woodland Conference Blue Division). Edgerson ended up with 12 points and six rebounds. Senior guard Jordan Daul had 11 points, and senior forward Ben Steker had 7 points and 11 rebounds. Pewaukee was 17 for 21 at the free throw line.
Jarron Jackson-Wilson scored 18 points for Brown Deer. Harmon ended up with 17 points.
"The starters and our bench all contribute," Daul said. "We really want to maintain first place in the conference, so we needed this one tonight."
The Pirates are deadlocked with Milwaukee Thomas More at 11-3 atop the standings. The Cavaliers defeated New Berlin West on Tuesday, 69-61, dropping the Vikings to 11-4 in league play.
"We had to play South Milwaukee, Ike and now this one; that's nice, now we've got to keep winning," Reuter added.
On Friday, Pewaukee hosts winless St. Francis (0-18, 0-15).
