Post presence leads Hawks past Kettle Moraine

Arrowhead scores wire-to-wire win

The secret to success for Arrowhead's varsity boys basketball team's 65-48 Classic 8 Conference victory over host Kettle Moraine Tuesday night was a simple one. It was get the lead early and never let the Lasers take it away.

That formula worked to perfection.

Mike Ottusch of the Lasers gave his team a 2-0 lead 90 seconds into the game, but after Arrowhead senior Ryan Saeger made back-to-back layups in the next minute to give his team a 4-2 lead, the Warhawks were never headed again.

AHS led 13-5 after the opening period and moved that advantage to 29-16 at the intermission. In the third period, the Warhawks led by 16 points (38-22) after a 3-pointer by DJ Escamilla.

Kettle Moraine cut the Arrowhead lead to 11 points (52-41) when Paul Miller banged in a pair of free throws. That run by the Lasers was cut short when Kenny Finco bombed in a 3-pointer, and Saeger canned two fouls shots for AHS to allow them to pull away for a final time.

"It was key for us to get off to a good start," said Arrowhead coach Craig Haase. "I thought our defense was outstanding. We held them to just five points in the first period, and that pretty much set the tone for the rest of the game."

AHS (9-9 overall, 7-4 in league play) has now defeated Kettle Moraine 15 times in their last 20 games and has back-to-back wins after four straight losses.

Kettle Moraine suffered its eighth loss in their last nine games. The Lasers fell to 3-8 in conference play and 5-12 on the season.

Arrowhead shot 49 percent from the field (24 of 49), and KM shot 32 percent (14 of 43).

Billy Hirschfeld led the Warhawks with 16 points. Saeger was next with 12 tallies. He made four of five shots from the floor and 4 of 5 free throws. Finco chipped in with 8 points and Dominic Todarello had 7 tallies.

Arrowhead's big men, Hirschfeld, Saeger and senior backup Austin Haase, combined for 34 points.

"That's the best our inside guys have played all year," the AHS coach said. "We got them the ball and they made the shots. And I have to give a lot of credit to Kenny Finco. He saw that the guys inside were open and decided to do a lot passing tonight and gave up some shots. Kenny played well. He had six rebounds and five assists. All around, we did a nice job tonight."

Miller, just a sophomore, led the Lasers with 15 points. He made 11 of 12 free throws.

ROCKIN' IT - Fred Eide, left, and his daughter Ashley, of Eide Painting and Sandblasting, use spray guns to paint the individual rock shapes on the underside of the I-94 overpass at Highway P in Oconomowoc Wednesday, May 16. Each "rock" is painted individually and then speckled with black paint to make it look like granite.
