Rival Arrowhead edges Lasers hockey

With 1:21 to go in Tuesday's boys hockey battle with Kettle Moraine/Mukwonago/Oconomowoc, Arrowhead called timeout and discussed precisely how to hold onto its 1-0 lead.

John Sorenson went ahead and activated Plan B.

Out of the faceoff in Arrowhead's zone, the sophomore Sorenson poked away the puck at the blue line, skated the length of the ice and beat Lasers goalie Quinn Disrud for a backbreaking strike at Naga-Waukee Ice Arena, ensuring the Warhawks would skate away with a 2-0 victory in the Classic 8 matchup.

"That was just kind of a broken play," Watt said. "What we tried to do is play tight. If we had to take icing, I was fine with that. When you're protecting a one-goal lead, you have to make sure you know what you're doing. We made sure everyone knew what they needed to do in every situation."

Junior goalie Trevor Macey turned back all 25 shots that he faced, and the win counted as an upset for a young Arrowhead team (5-1), slipping past the No. 7 team in the state.

"They had our number last year," Watt said. "Both times, they beat us 6-1. We were trying to get some redemption and some positive energy. They're the seventh-ranked team in the state, and they are for a reason; that's the most solid team we've seen so far."

Macey turned back a number of shots in the final stretch, stuffing a dangerous scramble in front of the net at the 2:43 mark and making a kick save 10 seconds later.

"My defense was just great," said Macey, playing in just his second full varsity game. "They blocked so many shots, I don't know what I'd do without them. I feel comfortable. There's always a long way to go; you can never improve enough. You've always got to keep going, but I love it.

"I have two of the top defensemen in the state."

One of Arrowhead's top defensemen, Sam Dvorak, took a shot from the blue line early in the game, a shot that glanced off Jake Bredeson's stick and into the net. The play came within the first minute of the game's first power-play opportunity, and Brian McColgan was also given an assist.

It was only Bredeson's second shift of the season. He had missed the first few games of the year with a shoulder injury incurred during the football season.

"We still don't have our full team," Watt said. "We're just trying to put things together and figure out line combinations."

Though Lasers (3-2) coach John Brymer saw his team rack up 14 goals in the first four games of the year, he felt the battle with Arrowhead represented a more typical situation.

"We're not a team that's going to score a lot of goals," he said. "Early on we played some weaker teams, but at the end of the day, these are the games we're going to be in, 2-1, 3-2 games. They outplayed us, outworked us. We couldn't get any decent shots on net. We were taking shots but firing the puck high and wide all night. That's not going to score goals.

"They're in our conference, and they've always been one of the top teams in the conference, so they're going to come and play hard," Brymer added. "They're well coached, and we played a heck of a team."
