SJNMA lands much-needed win

It hasn't been the easiest of seasons for the St. John's Northwestern Military Academy boys basketball team. But every time Martin Luther made a move Thursday night, the Lancers counterpunched. They ended up picking up their sixth win of the season.

The Lancers enjoyed a 22-5 advantage in free-throw attempts, and an 11-2 run in the fourth quarter helped keep the host Spartans at bay in the 66-55 Midwest Classic Conference outcome.

The win moved St. John's to 6-9 overall and 4-6 in league play.

"The kids that were here last year, they still don't know how to run an offense and the defense the way they need to," first-year coach Alfonzo Duncan said. "It's frustrating at times, but they're good kids, they're starting to play harder. They want to get better."

The lead was a healthy 13 points until ML sophomore Curtis Weathers drilled consecutive 3-pointers to make it 45-38 late in the third quarter, but senior Zach Detmer asserted himself with back-to-back baskets, including a putback basket at the quarter buzzer to make it 49-38.

Detmer finished with 23 points and demonstrated his key role as the go-to scorer and emotional leader.

"When he's not scoring, we're in trouble, and a lot of time when the ball isn't in his hands, we're in trouble," Duncan said.

After the Spartans again cut the lead to 49-41 early in the fourth, Pewaukee native Dominic Pfister blew through the lane for a layup, Kerrick Taylor scored, and Pfister found Chris Taylor for a layup that made the score 55-41. Taylor and Jerami Bates added baskets to extend the lead as large as 60-43.

All the while, the Lancers were effective at creating turnovers with a trapping defense in a game where both teams preferred to push the tempo.

Duncan said his team is still learning the art of the 2-3 zone.

"We put in the trap probably a couple weeks ago," he said.

Pfister finished with 12 points, and London Cobbs added 12. Big man Brad Roessler posted 9 points.

The Lancers converted 14 free throws while the Spartans - who were aided by eight 3-point baskets - made just three of five at the charity stripe.

Newman, Bush win titles

Two wrestlers from St. John's Northwestern Military Academy took championships, and the Lancers placed fourth at the Midwest Classic Conference wrestling meet Feb. 4 at Martin Luther in Greendale.

Five wrestlers reached the finals, including sophomore Danny Bush, who captured the title at 145 pounds. Junior Jordan Newman ran his record to 18-2 and won his second conference title with a pin in the finals at 170.

Senior Sam Dearing (106 pounds), senior Sean Rajman (195) and junior Alec Pina (120) all took second place.
