Warhawks get back on track, top North
AHS boys start fast and roll to victory
The four-game losing streak is history. The Arrowhead varsity boys basketball team got back on track last Friday night, topping visiting Waukesha North in a Classic 8 game behind a fast start, 62-41.
The win improved AHS to 8-9 overall and 6-4 in league play. Mukwonago and Milwaukee Pius are deadlocked for first place with 8-2 marks, and the Warhawks are alone in third place. Waukesha West, Catholic Memorial and Waukesha North all stand at 5-5 with four games remaining.
The win was the ninth in a row for Arrowhead over North. The 62 points also turned out to be their highest total in their last nine games.
"We had a tough little stretch there where not a lot of things went right for us," said Arrowhead coach Craig Haase. "So it was nice to come out and play well, especially early in the game. We've been struggling offensively and when we played so well in the first quarter, it helped our confidence a lot. Hopefully, this will give us some momentum for the rest of the season."
Arrowhead will play two conference games this week, meeting Kettle Moraine on Tuesday and Waukesha South on Friday.
While the Warhawks have struggled scoring points this season, that wasn't the case against North, especially in the first period. Arrowhead had its best opening quarter of the season, taking a commanding 23-10 edge after the first period.
In that quarter, five players scored for the Warhawks, led by junior guard Kenny Finco, who scored 10 points. Senior Ryan Saeger chipped in with 7 tallies. AHS stayed hot in the second period, taking a 38-21 lead at halftime.
After falling behind by as many as 19 points, the Northstars rallied to cut the deficit to six at 40-34 in the third. AHS then reeled off the final seven points of the quarter, getting a big 3-pointer from sophomore Ricky Finco at the buzzer to stretch their lead to 47-34.
Dominic Todarello and Kevin LeRoy scored the first two hoops of the fourth quarter for Arrowhead and the Northstars never recovered.
"North made a little run at us in the third quarter, but the nice thing is that our guys battled through it and got going again," Haase said. "We've had trouble at times playing through things like that. I thought the guys played well. Our defense was tough all night and we got pretty good balance on offense. It was nice to get back in the win column."
Finco finished with 17 points for the winners. Saeger chipped in with 11 tallies and senior Eric Cottrell added 10 points.
