Waukesha Wings earn hockey split
The combined Waukesha/Pewaukee varsity boys hockey team lost Marquette last week at the Naga-Waukee Ice Arena, 9-3. Marquette fired 48 shots at the Waukesha/PHS net. The Wings had just 24 shots on goal.
The Wings also stopped the WNS Storm last week, 6-2.
Marquette led 2-0 after the fist period and 5-2 after two periods. The Hilltoppers turned the game into a rout by scoring four times in the last 17 minutes.
Scoring goals for the Wings were Zed Dietrich, Tyler Kupsky and Coe Venes. Collecting assists were Nate Hawkins, Dietrich, Tiernan Moore and Jack Culp.
Steven Broda played in the goal for the Wings and turned back 39 of 48 shots.
Dietrich is the leading scorer in the state with 77 points.
In the win over WNS, Alex Runge and Kupsky scored two goals each and Dietrich and Culp scored one goal apiece. Collecting assists for Waukesha/Pewaukee were Dietrich (3), Nick Rader (2), Hawkins, Venes, Drew Kneisel and Thomas Aiken.
Waukesha/Pewaukee (12-10) hosts sixth-seeded Stoughton in the opening round of the WIAA playoffs Thursday, Feb. 16 at Naga-Waukee Ice Arena, carrying the third seed.
