Inclement weather!
It's the bane of mothers with rambunctious youngsters, husbands that pace or fidget like a caged lion when they can't be outside, and puppy dogs that love to go outside … just so they can leave their paw prints on the clean floor when they come back inside.
Most of us had to deal with that kind of weather last weekend. Dense fog. Temperatures pushing the 40-degree mark, and rain.
Though it was too wet for ice skating or cross-country skiing, and certainly not good weather for squirrel or rabbit hunting and definitely too sloppy for washing the car, it was ideal weather for spending a few hours inside where it was dry, learning new ways to improve on your outdoor skills.
As if a gift from heaven, inclement weather is a sports show promoter's best friend. What better place to spend a rainy day in January than at a sports show?
For the promoters of Oakwood Church of Delafield's third annual Sportsman's Day, Workshops For The Outdoorsman, the conditions Jan. 23 were ideal.
According to Scott Rice, men's ministerial administrator, Sportsman's Day is an opportunity for learning tips and tricks from hunting and fishing experts while fellowshipping with like-minded individuals of all ages.
The hunting seminars are slanted toward anyone, male and female, old enough to legally hunt.
Other subjects covered by the presenters included: Walleye Jigging Tips presented by Daryl Christensen, prize winning tournament angler, guide, author and featured speaker of the workshops; "Retriever Training: Getting the right start" by Doug and Patti Kennedy; "Build Your Dream Rifle" by Ed Gratz; Spring Smallmouth Tips & Tricks" by Chuck Bertelson; "Seasonal Panfish" by Ron Bergman; "The Outdoor Opportunity" by Chris Jones; "The Average Joe's Role In Deer Management and Rule Making" by Ron Kulas.
Besides the seminars, vendors, coffee and doughnuts, the price of admission includes noon lunch, main speaker and chance to win a great door prize.
Plan ahead. Circle January 2011 now so you don't miss out on the fourth annual Sportsman's Day next year.
