Let's talk turkey
With only 2 1/2 months remaining until the first of the six regular spring turkey hunting seasons opens, the good news is that postcard notifications to successful applicants began going out late last week.
If you applied for a turkey permit but don't get an approval notification postcard by mid-February, you can check on the status of your application by going online through the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Online Licensing Center or by calling the DNR Customer Call Center, from 7 a.m. through 10 p.m. seven days a week at (888) 936-7463.
The regular season structure, broken down into six Wednesdays through Sunday five-day periods, runs April 14-May 23.
Beginning with the 2009 fall turkey hunting season, the number of turkey hunting zones was restructured from 46 small zones to seven large zones. The total amount of hunting area is the same but provides the hunters with greater flexibility within their chosen zones.
The special two-day youth turkey hunt which, thanks to the new Mentored Hunting Program that includes youths 10 and 11 as well as 12-15, is set for the weekend of April 10-11.
Under the Mentored Hunting Program youths ages 10-15 may hunt without first having successfully completed a hunter education course, providing they are within arm's reach of a qualified adult mentor and follow all the rules of the Mentored Hunting Program.
Youth ages 12-15 who have already completed a hunter education course may hunt during the youth hunt while accompanied by an adult age 18 or older. Each youth must have a valid 2010 turkey harvest permit, license and stamp.
Hunters are reminded that the 2010 spring turkey hunting regulations are now part of the 2009 small-game hunting regulations booklet and can be found beginning on Page 17.
According to the DNR, 225,729 kill tags are available for this spring's hunt. Of those, more than 149,000 will go to successful applicants.
The remaining tags, nearly 77,000, will be available for over-the-counter sales. The total number of tags available this year was just 20 more than last year's total.
DNR registration figures indicate hunters harvested 52,581 turkeys during the 2009 spring hunt, when only bearded birds are legal targets.
Harvest numbers from the longer fall turkey season, when any turkey is legal, are not yet available.
