Come play with Mukwonago Village Players
After 38 years, theater group still going strong
With more than 100 shows to its credit, dating back to 1972 when the Mukwonago Village Players (MVP) surfaced in community theater as an outdoor summer musical in the park, the theater group has produced plays written by Mukwonago residents as well as classical shows such as "A Christmas Carol."
Mukwonago resident Ken Favell wrote original shows in the 1970s as well as an original play, "Pioneer Tapestry," for Mukwonago's Sesquicentennial, which was performed several times, including a performance at Old World Wisconsin.s
For many years, MVP produced three plays a year at Mukwonago High School, which usually included a summer musical, a comedy and a drama production.
The group has collaborated with the Mukwonago High School Drama Department, most recently with Christmas shows. Pat Hitt and MHS drama teacher Nancy Reese started this program with the first collaboration in "A Christmas Carol" in 2004, where Hitt directed and Reese served as the technical director.
A number of directors have produced shows for MVP over the years, including Hitt, who directed six. Mary Nugent, who directed more than 20 MVP productions, has been involved in local theater since 1974.
"For me, it is truly is about community and creativity. People from a broad spectrum of life come together with a single goal: to put on a show," Nugent said. "I have delighted in watching casts discover finding their characters and telling the story of the play. The Village Players have stated 'Come play with me.' How true."
Come play with me
As MVP looks to another season onstage, the group will follow the guidance of a new board with a new vision. President Derek Watkins, Vice President Pat Hitt, Treasurer Gary Rohn, Producer Amy Mueller Hemken, Stage Manager Pauline Urso, Publicity Tony Davis and Secretary Cheryl Hemken are creating a new vision of reaching out to the Mukwonago community for support of the theater group.
Being a nonprofit group that encourages families and community members to become involved and work together with others who share common interests, MVP is holding a March kickoff at Espresso Love Coffee from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, March 7. MVP board members will be present to meet those who are interested in theater, whether through volunteering, acting, singing or technical work. MVP has opportunities for many individuals to share their talents.
Spring show
The next production will be a spring musical performed at Ivan's on the Square in East Troy from April 30-May 9, when MVP brings "Malt Shop Memories" to the stage. Written and directed by Waukesha playwright Tony Davis, the show bring the '50s and '60s back to life. Relive politics, fads, styles, movies and the music of a memorable time that shaped pop culture.
