Can you help these struggling families?
VLC looking for donations
In September, Volunteers of Lake Country (VLC) hosted a bookmark making children's workshop at the Waukesha Library to bring awareness to the community about a book drive that the Waukesha Reads program is running in October for the VLC Children's Free Library at the Hope Center. Over 30 people dropped off items needed for VLC's September clients who were referred by Human Services.
Hundreds of children's books were shared; volunteers helped pick up larger furniture donations and delivered them to the VLC locker; others helped load furniture on delivery night; some helped deliver and set up at the clients' apartments; 36 volunteers signed up to staff three grocery stores to collect food and toiletries for the Drive for the Homeless Shelters; people harvested and delivered produce to food pantries and meal sites from the VLC garden; and others have already signed up to sponsor children in need for Christmas.
VLC invites the community to help make a difference.
VLC keeps everyone up-to-date on needs and opportunities to help with a newsletter that is emailed out the first of each month. If you would like to receive it, you can sign up at their website, www.VolunteersOfLakeCountry.org, or email contact@VolunteersOfLakeCountry.org.
VLC has accepted four families this month who are living in difficult situations. Needs were posted in the newsletter that went out Oct. 1, and many have already been met. Items still needed include:
A single mom with an 18-month-old boy needs fall and winter clothing (18-24 month). Clean and bagged or boxed clothes can be left on the porch at W305 N6781 Red Fox Run, Hartland.
A mom with a 13-year-old daughter is having knee replacement surgery this month, and she is presently sleeping on the floor. VLC has the queen bed to share, but she still needs a chest of drawers (a tall dresser, as the apartment is very small).
A mom with a 3-year-old boy is also sleeping on the floor. VLC have the bed to share, but he needs a small chest of drawers for his clothes.
VLC will be running the Drive for the Homeless Shelters for their October project, collecting food and toiletries at three area grocery stores. All three shifts at all three stores are already full.
The November/December VLC Project is sponsoring a child in need for Christmas. It is a very personal giving experience. VLC will personally match each sponsor with a child in need from a family who was going to have to tell their child that Santa may not be stopping at their house this Christmas. Sponsors call mom, get the child's wish/need list, shop, wrap and deliver gifts to the families' homes.
