Al Brown | Tracking the Seasons

Hunting calendar is upon us

With Wisconsin's buffet of fishing and hunting seasons now in full swing, it was more than a bit challenging to concentrate on any one activity while following the happenings of the Badgers, Brewers and the Green Bay Packers.

Beginning Oct. 1 at 9 a.m., it was that kind of a weekend.

Starting with the late opening of the Southern zone waterfowl hunting season in the morning and followed by a preplanned afternoon fishing trip out of Port Washington for salmon and trout, it was a busy day to say the least.

As the morning slipped by, some wood ducks were bagged and many were missed. The same held true for the fishing, with one small coho and one big rainbow coming to net while others waved goodbye as they spit the hooks and swam away.

On Oct. 9 at sunset, the first week of Wisconsin's Southern zone split waterfowl hunting season and the Southern zone Exterior Canada goose hunting season comes to an end. This five-day closer does not affect the goose hunting in the Horicon Zone.

Both seasons will remain closed Oct. 10 through Oct. 14, reopening one-half hour before sunrise Oct. 15.

With the exception of our river systems, which still have water but are generally low due to lack of rain, large numbers of marshes and potholes that normally attract migrating waterfowl have become mud flats or completely overgrown with weeds.

Even waterfowlers who have headed west to sample the offerings of the new Mississippi River duck zone have found the water levels there on the low side.

The season on the "Big Miss" opened at 9 a.m. Sept. 24 and ran through Oct. 2. Like the rest of the Southern zone, it will reopen Oct. 15 and run through Dec. 4.

Although water levels are low, duck numbers are up this fall, and hunters with access to water are finding good shooting for both ducks and geese.

The daily bag limit for the full 60 days is six ducks, not to include more than four mallards, of which only one may be a hen, three wood ducks, one black duck, two redheads, two scaup, two pintail, and one canvasback. In addition, the bag limit includes five mergansers to include not more than two hooded mergansers. The daily bag limit of coot is 15.

ROCKIN' IT - Fred Eide, left, and his daughter Ashley, of Eide Painting and Sandblasting, use spray guns to paint the individual rock shapes on the underside of the I-94 overpass at Highway P in Oconomowoc Wednesday, May 16. Each "rock" is painted individually and then speckled with black paint to make it look like granite.
