Good things of all sizes

One of the best Christmas gifts Mukwonago received came before Black Friday when Highway 83 reopened in time for the rush of holiday shopping traffic.

It is definitely a different landscape along the new and improved highway. Editors from our Hartland office call it the Mukwonago autobahn and, all joking aside, traveling along Highway 83 is smooth and seamless - as long as roundabouts are taken into account and navigated with a little caution and respect.

With a new highway, a new library and a new YMCA on the horizon, the face of Mukwonago has changed dramatically in the past year. With two of the three arriving in December, the community can't ask for much more for Christmas.

However, the true spirit of Christmas sits behind me in our office, where the response from residents to the need for filling empty shelves at local food pantries nearly blocks the path to my desk. That is only the tip of the iceberg. Generous monetary donations have surpassed what we recorded last year.

As I wind my way through the new roundabouts and enjoy the spaciousness of the new library, those piles of donations in the corner remind me that it isn't what one is given, even if it is big, bright, new and fast. Instead, it's what one gives that leaves its mark on a community. Every time the door opens and someone asks if we are still taking donations for the food pantry a bell should chime, since I am certain another angel got its wings.

Although it's a different landscape than it was last year in Mukwonago, it is a brighter, hopefully happier landscape as businesses pull out from setbacks felt during road construction, patrons become acquainted with the new library, residents look forward to healthier opportunities provided by the YMCA and pantry shelves fill the void in empty stomachs.

As we navigate through the new year, don't leave your mark on the community by plowing through the middle of the pack. Yield to those around you, share when you can and enjoy what others have to offer.

ROCKIN' IT - Fred Eide, left, and his daughter Ashley, of Eide Painting and Sandblasting, use spray guns to paint the individual rock shapes on the underside of the I-94 overpass at Highway P in Oconomowoc Wednesday, May 16. Each "rock" is painted individually and then speckled with black paint to make it look like granite.
