Mukwonago High School selects Miller Park for site of 2013 graduation

Commencement set for 3 p.m. June 2, 2013

Since crossing off Elmbrook Church as an option for a graduation venue earlier this year - a judge deemed it unconstitutional - the Mukwonago Area School District has spent months searching for a new venue.

Using several guidelines, the district - led by a graduation committee - whittled down a list of 10 options and on Monday proposed Miller Park as the site of the 2013 MHS graduation ceremony. Since Miller Park is not available June 9, the original date planned for MHS graduation, the ceremony was moved to Sunday, June 2, 2013 at 3 p.m.

The question over a graduation site was revisited in Mukwonago after a July ruling from the 7th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals stating that the Elmbrook School District violated the constitutional separation of church and state by holding graduation ceremonies inside Elmbrook Church. A month later, the Elmbrook School Board decided to ask the U.S.Supreme Court to rule on the lawsuit.

Without Elmbrook Church as an option, a committee composed of seven students, six staff members and three parents researched and visited options for an alternate site. Criteria included a facility that allowed the entire class to graduate together, where students could bring more than three guests, a facility that could hold about 3,200 people for the ceremony, provide a good sound and video system and meet the physical needs of guests while creating excitement for graduates.

Dale Quakkelaar, a parent member of the committee, said all options were scrutinized carefully and those eliminated were crossed off the list due to size, availability or other factors.

While Miller Park will provide ample seating and quality sound and video equipment, it comes at a cost - a cost $12,000 higher than holding the ceremony at Elmbrook. With $4,500 budgeted for graduation at Elmbrook, the $16,500 price tag on Miller Park resulted in plans to raise additional funds to cover the extra cost, explained MHS Principal Shawn McNulty.

A winter dance, DVD sales of the ceremony and charging for tickets beyond the three allotted tickets each graduate would get at no cost were several ideas Quakkelaar and senior class president Nick Blohm outlined for the MASD School Board as sources of revenue to fund the graduation venture.

"With the energy our class has, I'm sure we can raise more than this," Blohm said, pointing to the close, active senior student body at MHS.

However, Miller Park isn't a long-term solution. It's only being considered for the 2013 graduation ceremony, according to McNulty. Since the Elmbrook School District appealed the ruling, MHS is waiting to see whether the U.S. Supreme Court takes action before determining where future graduation ceremonies would be held.

"We didn't work on a long-term solution simply because we're waiting to see what will happen," said McNulty. "I think we can all agree that we would love to return to Elmbrook if the facility is available."

  1. What is the matter with using HS facilities where the costs would be low and at a convenient location?

Look at all the wasted time, air pollution, global warming, etc., of having all these people make the long trip to Miller Park rather than having it locally.
  2. Hope the intolerant Atheist bullies are happy they ended up pushing the families 15 miles East into a venue named after alcohol.
  3. Once again we see how the perpetually aggrieved cost us big money This time we must cave to the atheists for having had a graduation ceremony in a building that's also a church. Last time the Native Americans came forward waving their apparent copyright to the word indians.
These special privileged groups affect the freedom and well being of all the good and reasonable people in this country. And not in a good way.
  4. Return the graduation to the High School. Class size has dropped considerably over
the last 10 years and everyone survived back in the late 90's - mid 2000's. Give
each graduate 3 tickets with an opportunity to sell their 3rd ticket to the highest
    bidder.
  5. Many high schools no longer use their auditoriums for graduation because students want to bring more than three guests.
  6. Add me to the list of PARENTS that wonder why we just don't do this at the school.

Since when is it the student's choice for an alternate venue??

We can have the ceremony either on the football field, or in the gym at a lot less cost. I was only able to attend my older siblings activities because I played in the band. The students were limited to THREE guests.

I attended my children's commencements at Elmbrook Church in '09 and '11. I really didn't care if it is a church, the sight lines in there are horrible. For THAT reason, I'm kinda glad they are switching.
  7. Muckwon9ward & Mucho - This is all been discussed before. Its not an "atheist thing". That church basically engagaed in proselytizing in past when used by the MHS for graduations. For any public school function, thats a definitive no-no.
  8. Just asking a question. Each student is limited to 3 tickets, right? Mom and Dad have divorced and both remarried. How do you choose which one of the four parents stays home?
  9. I blanched at the thought of going to a church to attend my child's commencement about 5 years ago. But...my older sibling set me straight - told me how it was back when niece and nephew graduated and the commencement was held at MHS. Said it was horribly hot, crowded, parking was awful and and sound/video systems were inadequate. When I went to the ceremony at Elmbrook, I could see why they chose this location - it was a very comfortable space, large enough to house everyone, parking was ample, and sound system was good. HOWEVER. I wondered how non-Christian families felt when they had to snap a picture of their child walking across the stage and receiving their diploma, with a gigantic cross hanging on the wall behind them. Had a similar reaction when years ago, I'd drive by Clarendon Elem. and see a big church banner plastered across the lawn advertising Brooklife's services being held there on Sundays. It does seem like the school district picks and chooses when to follow the idea of church/state separation.
  10. Having it at the HS is NOT an option. 3 tickets per student in not practicle. There are generally 2 parents, 2 sets of grandparents and siblings. Not to mention blended families, then the numbers only climb from there.

Additionally having elderly grandparents climb into the bleachers in the gym is a broken hip waiting to happen.
  11. "3 tickets per student in not practical". What! It was plenty practical when I graduated and no one had any of these issues expressed above.

"Just asking a question. Each student is limited to 3 tickets, right? Mom and Dad have divorced and both remarried. How do you choose which one of the four parents stays home?" IMO, the student only has 2 natural parents so it should be them and they can flip for the 3rd. Plenty of time to party later.

This whole graduation thing has taken on a entertainment life of its own with all the excesses associated with it. Receiving the diploma is only a 15 second shot in ones life...then its time to move on. How many people on here can find their diploma, let alone a picture of the event?
  12. @keyblr13 I disagree, it IS practical. Most grad parties were on the day of the commencement ceremony. You took your three favorite people to the school, then the throng of friends and family were at the party location afterwards. My grandparents did not attend my graduation, they were waiting at the house when I got there.

@Room222 LOL, I used to watch that show when I was young.

You had to be at a real wierd angle in the church if you were trying to snap a photo of your kid being handed a diploma cover in front of the cross. When I was there, both times they were handed out on audience right. With the poor sight lines in there, I wonder if any parent got a decent photo in the first place.

And as far as blended families go, at least mine Atron, neither of us see our exes, period.

FWIW Wingnut .... no blending here.
