Town of Vernon home destroyed in fire
Town of Vernon – Seven fire departments responded to an overnight blaze on Fernwood Drive early Sunday morning. The Big Bend-Vernon Fire Department arrived on the scene to find the garage of the home engulfed in flames, which spread to the house causing a total $200,000 to $260,000 in damage, according to Fire Chief Phillip Buchholtz.
The call came in at 2:15 a.m. from a passerby on the highway.
Buchholtz said the cause of the blaze is still under investigation by the Waukesha County Sheriff's Department investigation team, but officials believe careless use of smoking material might have started the fire. Officials believe a cigarette was discarded in the garage in a bucket for that purpose, causing papers lying near the bucket to ignite. The fire consumed the garage, including two vehicles kept in the garage, and then spread to the house.
The owners of the home were out of town, but the house was occupied by the couple's daughter, son and a friend of the son at the time of the fire. All occupants were able to get out on their own. No one was injured in the blaze. The owners were contacted and returned a couple of hours later.
The Town of Waukesha, Mukwonago, North Prairie, Tess Corners, Town of Brookfield, and Tichigan fire departments provided mutual aid in responding to the fire. Firefighters were on the scene about six hours until the fire was extinguished.
