Market Square reopens in Mukwonago

After a 2008 hood-system fire destroyed most of the kitchen and the basement banquet room at Mukwonago's Market Square, 1015 Highway NN, owner Martin Guerrero said he wasn't sure when he'd be able to reopen his restaurant. After a little over a year, the insurance process finally resolved, Market Square reopened Jan. 4.

If you'd been to Market Square before the fire, you'll be surprised when you return now. Not only has the entire restaurant been remodeled, but there's also a new menu, staff and management. One thing that hasn't changed, however, is the warm customer service.

New look

The restaurant has a new look, from it's decor to its brand-new kitchen. Guests walk in to a modern, yet cozy, environment, and can share a meal with family and friends at a booth or a table or even grab a drink at the new bar.

New staff

All the staff is new, explained Guerrero. Along with the new staff comes new management; Guerrero's daughter, Maythe, and her husband, Erick Lozano, will manage the new restaurant.

New menu

"We used to have a very large menu," said Guerrero. "We now have nice quality food with a shorter menu."

Lozano is excited about the new menu, which offers breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Everything is homemade and cooked to order, explained Lozano. Because of that, they are able to accommodate requests based on allergies, etc.

"Everything's made from scratch," said Lozano. "We try to make things as healthy as possible, using natural fats, sugars and olive oil." The menu will change constantly, depending on the season, in order to offer the freshest ingredients, he said.

Whereas the old menu was more of a Greek family-style restaurant, the new menu can better be described as casual family dining.

"It's soul food without being soul food," said Lozano, smiling. "We cook things we want to so we put some extra tender love and care in there. We try new things for the fun of it, not because it's our job."

Maythe came up with the idea for the increasingly popular orange crepes, a new favorite on the breakfast menu, explained Lozano.

The half-pound hamburger is extremely popular for lunch.

Want a bacon hamburger? You'll get a bacon mixed in with the hamburger patty and even more bacon on top. Craving a cheeseburger? You'll have cheese mixed in with the burger and more on top, said Lozano.

The dinner menu features meals such as scallops, mussels, tequila shrimp, Thai curry, eggplant Parmesan, ribeye steak, vegetarian dishes and more. The menu pairs wines with each meal.

"We're really working on our wine list," Lozano said. "We offer wine by the glass, bottle and half-bottle."

The dessert menu will also change weekly.

"We want to thank everyone for patiently waiting (for our reopening)," said Guerrero.

Lozano agreed. "We have a lot of loyal customers that have come back. Every time we see a familiar face, we try to do something special for them. We want to welcome new customers, and we hope to stick around for years to come."

Market Square is open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday. A grand opening is planned for later this month. For more information, call (262) 378-3001.
