Park View fueling up for wellness

Park View Middle School (PVMS) is taking the lead for student health as one of the few schools selected to participate in a nationwide wellness event in partnership with the National Dairy Council (NDC) and the National Football League (NFL). Community-focused and fun, Fuel Up to Play 60 is activating schools and communities to support school wellness initiatives, good nutrition and physical activity to help educate students and curb obesity.

PVMS and its students are pledging to adopt healthier behaviors, such as choosing foods encouraged by the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans and committing to 60 minutes of physical activity every day.

The school introduced Fuel Up to Play 60 with a promotional event Jan. 22. After "fueling up" with an all-school breakfast, homeroom classes participated in a trivia contest designed to get students registered on the FuelUpToPlay60.com Web site, where they will compete with students from other schools to win prizes. Students will set wellness goals and track the healthy changes they make to rack up points. Prizes include an iPod touch, a starring role in a Fuel Up To Play 60 promotion with an NFL player, and a healthy school makeover with a Fuel Up To Play 60 theme.

"We're looking for ways to influence the eating and physical activity habits of students by incorporating wellness activities into our school environment," said Nancy Movrich, physical education teacher and student government adviser at Park View.

"Building positive eating behavior is a challenge that requires communitywide support," added Pam Harris, registered dietitian and food service supervisor. "Fuel Up to Play 60 provides the healthy messages, resources and activities we need to get started."

Two wellness projects will kick off Feb. 18 with an assembly featuring entertainers from ComedySportz in Milwaukee and a mass dance performance of Michael Jackson's "Thriller." All dance participants will be eligible to win a Green Bay Packers jersey autographed by Greg Jennings. After-school snacks will be available to students as one of the wellness projects. In addition, students will participate in "Fitness Fridays" by walking the school hallways for physical activity during homeroom.

The program sponsors have provided PVMS with a $1,000 grant to host the Feb. 18 kickoff event. The sponsors will also contribute an additional $1,000 to help defray costs of the wellness projects.
