MHS parent group organizing post-prom event
For more than a decade, East Troy High School has offered a drug-free, alcohol-free post-prom event for upperclassmen, which has been entertaining and well-received by students, according to Rosemary Martin, chairwoman for the ETHS event.
Following that example - and that set by other schools such as Waterford, New Berlin Eisenhower, Homestead and Menomonee Falls, who have also offered successful post-prom events - the Mukwonago High School Parent Teacher Advisory Group (PTAG) will provide a safe, positive event after prom this year on April 23 at the high school.
"Safety and a positive place to be after prom is the key to the event," said PTAG President Cheri Winchowky.
At East Troy, Martin said, the junior class event offers activities such as a hypnotist, obstacle course, carnival games, over-size tricycles, casino games, food and raffles, with everything donated by members of the community.
"It's about a $6,000 party," said Martin. "I think they (students) appreciate that they have an out."
The success of the event hinges on strict adherence to event policies involving no carry-ins, signing in at the event and a one-time exit. Hall and parking lot monitors help adhere to the event policy.
"If kids know what is allowed and what isn't allowed, they will abide by it," Martin pointed out. "They had a great time last year."
As the group moves forward with its first post-prom offering, suggested activities include laser tag, board games, movies, volleyball, dodgeball, ping-pong, Sumo wrestling, giant trikes, inflatables, karaoke, teen bands, a coffee bar, guitar playing, raffle tables, wheel of fortune and videogames as well as a food court featuring beverages, a variety of food and desserts.
PTAG is looking for donations of raffle items, food or monetary help, community members to help chaperone, local talent for music as well as any other donations toward the event. Individuals or groups willing to donate to the post prom event should contact the MHS parent group at mhsptag@mukwonago.k12.wi.us.
An organizational meeting will be held Tuesday, March 9 at 7 p.m. in the MHS library for anyone interested in helping.
