Big Bend to create commission
Faced with the disbanding of the joing Big Bend-Vernon Fire Department at the end of the year, the Village of Big Bend is moving forward with the creation of its own police and fire commission.
The board on Thursday instructed its attorney to draft an ordinance to convert the existing Police Commission into a police and fire commission, according to Village President James Soneberg. The village is waiting to hear back from the Town of Vernon, Mukwonago and Tess Corners about proposals for joint fire services. So far, the village has heard back from only the Town of Waukesha, which denied its request.
Waukesha Town Chairman Robert Tallinger said the main reason it decided not to contract or combine with Big Bend was because it would take the department 18 to 20 minutes to get to Big Bend.
"We thought the best thing they could do was to talk to Vernon and negotiate their contract," he said. "They're neighbors. They've worked together for I don't know how many years, and that's the best way to go."
The Big Bend Fire Department Exploratory Committee plans to meet at 6:30 p.m. tonight to continue to discuss the village's options for fire protection.
Soneberg said the village has been working to poll the Big Bend-Vernon Fire Department staff and will discuss that information at the meeting.
"We've been working diligently to get this process going," he said.
