Premiums should be unaffected

Insurance rates for Town of Vernon residents shouldn't increase once the town forms its own fire department Jan. 1, 2011.

Supervisor Tom Bird said that he has spent a significant amount of time speaking to insurance agents from various companies, who all told him that a new department would not lead to raised rates.

Vernon Residents for Sensible Government leader Mike Doble has expressed concern in the past that his own insurance rates would increase significantly once the Big Bend-Vernon Fire Department splits at the end of the year. However, Doble admitted that after talking to a number of other residents who had also spoken with their own agents, he realized it might have just been his agent that would raise rates.

Board members expressed concern that because Doble made the insurance rate issue public, people might not realize that most companies will not raise rates.

Chairman Fred Michalek told board members he spoke to his own agent who assured him his rates would not increase.

When board members met with RW Management on Feb. 12, the issue of insurance came up. Ed Henschel a spokesperson for the consulting firm said he'd be surprised if the Fire Department split had any significant impact on residential insurance rates.
