Class builds more than just a playhouse
Students in the Mukwonago High School building trades program are gaining more than hands-on experience. By building a playhouse that will be raffled off in the community, they are also gaining self-confidence, pride and an understanding of service to others.
The project is part of a fundraiser for the Mukwonago Rotary Club, a local service organization that provides support to local Scout troops, trade school scholarships, the Salvation Army, food pantries, international programs and the MHS building trades program. The playhouse will be raffled off to raise money to support the Rotary Club and its work in the community.
The playhouse is a scaled-down version of a "real house." Tim Novotny said the students are getting real-life experience by learning how to take dimensions, cutting wood, framing and siding. More important, explained Novotny, the students are learning to pay attention to detail and to solve problems on their own.
The playhouse, valued at $2,500, will be displayed at various places around town, including Citizens Bank, Johnson Bank, Walgreens, Walmart and Pick 'n Save. Its first stop, however, will be at the Phantom Lake YMCA Camp for Breakfast with the Easter Bunny from 9 to 11 a.m. March 27. Community members can purchase tickets for $3 each or four for $10.
