Mukwonago continues to rise in AP exams

Mukwonago Area School District — High School students continue to increase their participation in AP exams, and continue to improve their performance, helping Wisconsin retain its Best in the Midwest title.

Statewide, 16,109 graduates took an AP exam while in high school, which represents 25.3 of the state's graduates in 2009 compared to 24.2 in 2008, according to the sixth annual AP Report to the Nation released last month by the College Board. The number of students scoring 3 or higher rose to 17.3 percent from 16.6 percent the previous year.

The number of MHS students taking AP tests has increased steadily over the years. In 1993, MHS had 73 students take 100 tests, and 74 of those tests received a score of 3 or higher. Ten years later, the number of MHS students taking the test rose to 134 students taking 207 exams, with 163 receiving scores of 3 or higher. Last year, 261 MHS students took 453 AP exams, and 341 received a score of 3 or higher.

Advanced Placement tests, offered by the College Board, are given to students in May after the completion of a special course of study. Exams are graded on a scale of 1 to 5, with a score of 3 or higher eligible for advanced placement or credit at most colleges or universities.

More than 90 percent of students who took AP calculus exams last year scored 3 or higher. Psychology was the most popular exam, and 87 percent of those students received 3 or higher.

MHS offered nine AP courses last year and has added two new courses this year, European history and physics.

"We're offering more courses, and we think our numbers - both in students taking the exam and students scoring 3 or higher - will continue to increase," said Mary Koski, director of student learning. "Those are students who are willing to take that challenge."

Over the years, about 75 percent of MHS students have scored 3 or higher after taking the AP challenge, according to Koski.

"For students to take an AP course, it gives them a real taste of what they will get in college," Koski said.

Taking a college-level course in high school allows students to meet every day, provides a high school setting instead of a college lecture setting and is taught by a teacher students are familiar with so they know who to go to with questions and to get help, Koski noted.

According to the College Board, a score of 3 or higher on an AP exam is a good predictor of a student's ability to succeed in college and earn a bachelor's degree.
