Chamber seeks approval for band shell

Village of Mukwonago - The Mukwonago Area Chamber of Commerce is hoping to move forward with a proposed band shell for Indian Head Park. Members of the chamber will go before the Village of Mukwonago Plan Commission tonight, May 9, seeking approval of the proposed design. According to the conditional-use permit application, the band shell "will create a gathering point for residents and visitors to enjoy music and other performances. Chamber of Commerce Executive Director April Reszka said the proposed project is estimated to cost $50,000.

The cost of building the band shell will be the responsibility of the chamber. However, Village Clerk Paul Moderacki said that the Village Board has allocated up to $12,000 for the preparation of all conditional-use permits, renderings and development. The village's money is coming from the parkland reserve account that Eileen "Kay" Hurm started to raise funds for a gazebo or band shell.

The chamber is also conducting a fundraiser, with proceeds going toward the band shell. Individuals and companies can purchase "Bare Bears" for $50 each or "Painted Bears" for $75 each. The bears will then be decorated with a company theme or any design they wish. Starting June 1, the bears will be on display around the village before they are auctioned off at the second Music in the Park, slated for Friday, Aug. 17. Funds from the auction will go toward the project as well.

According to Reszka, the band shell's designer, George Krueger, is putting together a materials list for the project. As soon as the list is complete, the chamber will look for material donations. In the meantime, the chamber is collecting monetary donations for the project, and is compiling a list of volunteers who would like to donate time, talent or equipment when construction starts. Monetary donations can be dropped off at The Music Café or the Mukwonago Area Chamber Office. Those interested in volunteer opportunities should send email to director@mukwonagochamber.org.

The first Music in the Park will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, July 14, with a performance by Skip Towne & The Grey Hounds. The chamber hopes to have the platform of the stage constructed by then.
