MHS debate team rises to top of state
The Mukwonago High School debate team won two state titles at the varsity and novice levels during the state tournament on Jan. 21 and 22, capping the most successful season ever in MHS debate team history, according to MHS debate coach Dan Hansen.
The state title, earned with a 10-2 record over two days, was won by the foursome of Matt Nelson, Mackenzie Payne, Allison Friske and Marina Lant. The squad also swept the annual awards for best affirmative pair and best negative pair, as well as Payne taking top speaker at her position and Nelson ranking second at his.
Taking fourth place at the state tournament was the team of: Amanda Fuller, Abby Koshollek, Jason Baron and Erica Dietzler. Koshollek placed in the top five speakers overall and both she and Baron ranked second-best speaker at their positions.
For the first time in program history, debaters in the novice division went undefeated and brought home the novice state title. That squad consisted of: Nicole Phelps, Sophia Dolan, Brynne Reilly and Aaron Helmers. Phelps and Reilly were additionally recognized for being the best speakers in their position while Dolan and Helmers were second in their positions.
