Mukwonago Library names interim director

The Mukwonago Community Library is welcoming an interim director. Jane Ameel will be performing the library director duties for about six months while a search for a permanent replacement is under way.

This comes in the wake of the departure of Nick Weber who, after serving as the library's director for more than four years, has taken a similar position in Illinois, in part to be closer to his fiancee.

Ameel, who has an undergraduate degree from Northwestern University and a graduate degree in library science from Dominican University, comes to Mukwonago after 28 years of service to the Waukesha Public Library.

"I retired in May," Ameel said, "but I just found out that I like productive activity and liked having co-workers and a good structure."

In her time with Waukesha Public Library, the library was named the 2011 Wisconsin Library of the Year, had a successful Waukesha Reads program, and a community public arts program just to name a few of its successes. The library also went through a couple of expansions in her 28 years as director.

"I'm so very familiar with handling that shakeout that occurs after libraries do expansion projects," Ameel said.

She said her favorite part of working in libraries has always been the people, and she is excited to get to know the people in Mukwonago a little better.

"I see we have a great staff and a good board and a great, beautiful building in a great community," Ameel said. "I'm excited to meet everyone."

In the next six months or so, Ameel said her main responsibility will be keeping the organization on track and serving as a resource to the current staff.

"Change is change," Ameel said. "I'm just here to make that change and that transition as easy as possible."

According to Ameel, the process to find a new director is already under way. The Library Board formed a search committee and recently wrote a proposal to have a search firm assist in the process. They anticipate the search firm will be announced at the February board meeting.

In the meantime, Ameel will work about 20 hours per week at the library. She anticipates her time with the Mukwonago Community Library to be enjoyable. She encourages the community to stop by and meet her during her office hours, which are generally Mondays, Wednesdays and Friday mornings.

"I'm just very happy to be here and am looking forward to meeting the community," Ameel said. "I just hope to help keep doing the good job this library has been doing all along."
