Old Man Winter is back in town
Season's first snow brings only minor accidents
Winter finally arrived last Thursday as the area got coated with between 5 and 6 inches of snow. Most motorists made their way just fine along the slippery streets, but an unlucky few encountered dings and ditches.
A Hank's Transportation school bus with just a couple of students on board was rear-ended by a vehicle at about 2:45 p.m. Thursday near National Avenue and Scotland Drive in Vernon. No students were hurt, but police were called to the scene.
Village of Mukwonago Police reported that at about 2:10 p.m., a vehicle took out one decorative streetlight along East Wolf Run. Two cars ended up in the ditch between 5 and 6 a.m. Friday, one on Highway 43, the other near McDivitt Lane and Honeywell Road. No one was injured in any of the incidents.
Big Bend also had three vehicles that ended up in the ditch, all of which needed to be winched out.
The Town of Mukwonago had just one incident: a vehicle struck and knocked down a yield sign in the Highway 83 and Highway I roundabout.
Only one vehicle ended up in the ditch in the Village of Eagle.
Thomas Brandemuehl, Village of Mukwonago Public Works Supervisor, said Thursday morning that "we're ready to go." Crews were out from when the snow started Thursday until 5 p.m. and again from about 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday. They returned to the streets at about 4 a.m. Friday morning to clear roads for morning commuters.
Before Thursday, village plow trucks had been out only three times this winter, one time to plow and salt, the other two times just to salt.
In Vernon, crews had been out four times before Thursday's storm, one time to salt and plow, otherwise just salt.
As for the next time snow begins to fall, Village of Big Bend Police Chief Mike Hartert reminds motorists to "slow down and give yourself enough room to stop."
