Take caution when out on the ice

A mild winter has kept most recreationists off the ice and has led to the cancellation of some events. But now that temperatures are finally dipping, people are heading out on the ice.

So far the Town of Mukwonago Police Department reports that waterways haven't frozen enough to support recreation.

"We continue to monitor hoping that we will have an opportunity to enjoy the activities that a solid ice pack provides," Town of Mukwonago Police Chief Tom Czarnecki said.

"As with all lakes there are certain areas to be cautious of such as springs or currents. People unfamiliar with the lake should use extra caution. People should also check with their insurance companies to verify whether their coverage extends onto frozen waters. A good source for current ice depth for any lake is the local bait shop," Chief Czarnecki said.

Fishermen on Phantom Lake on Saturday reported ice depths of about seven to eight inches on most of the lake and about three to four inches around the southern part of the lake.

Bob Robran of Caldwell headed out on the ice on Phantom Lake during Friday's storm and caught about 11 fish but didn't have much luck after an hour of fishing on Saturday. Terry Nelson of Racine headed onto the ice around 10 a.m. on Saturday and caught about four to five fish by early afternoon.

Jason Northern of Milwaukee and a couple of friends said Phantom Lake is one of the better lakes for fishing. They hit the ice early Saturday morning and caught six Northern Pike, the largest being about 23 inches, and a 15- to 16-inch large mouth bass by early afternoon.
