Where will future plans take Hwy. 83 through the Village of Mukwonago?
Village of Mukwonago - Four lanes through downtown and a roundabout at Highways 83 and ES are just two of the options on the table, as the state examines what to do with Highway 83 between Highways I and ES.
Residents got a peek at improvement options Jan. 16 as the Village Stakeholder Advisory Committee (SAC) held an open house to share the planning work that has been done so far and review the scope of the upcoming Wisconsin Department of Transportation (DOT) study.
The SAC, consisting of residents, business owners and village officials, started working with the DOT in 2011 when it was determined projected roadway improvements to Highway 83 could require extensive widening, removing all street parking and eliminating a number of driveways and street intersections, according to information at the open house. With the possibility of widening Highway 83 to four lanes through downtown, the village initiated a joint study with the DOT to look at the possibility of rerouting Highway 83 onto Holz Parkway.
Aerial maps with three traffic options from Henry Street to Washington Avenue showed the possibility of widening Highway 83 to a two-lane divided road. Two options also consider rerouting Highway ES, with one option including a roundabout at Highways 83 and ES.
Traffic projections and analysis, train crossing and intersection analysis, along with a study of pavement conditions and estimated costs associated with different options will be included in the scope of the road study.
The SAC crafted a mission statement defining Mukwonago as a "vibrant community, rich with recreational and cultural assets, history and a strong quality of life." Part of that mission statement indicates an area "offering big-city accessibility and conveniences with an appealing small-town feel, plentiful shopping, quaint restaurants and comfortable gathering spaces."
Two renderings of conceptual village centers that would provide additional parking and enhanced pedestrian crossings offered a glimpse at a possible future for the village.
The SAC plans to make an initial report to the village by March 31. Final recommendations over the cost and tradeoff between the village and the state on the selected route is expected by April 30. A final route is to be proposed to the Village Board by June 17.
