Community donates generously

To the editor,

The Mukwonago Lions thank you.

There are many families and individuals in the Mukwonago area who cannot afford to meet their basic nutritional needs. When you donate food, money or time to the food pantries, you ensure a single mother can feed her child, a local senior citizen is able to receive a bag full of groceries or that a child can enjoy a nutritious meal.

The Mukwonago Lions would like to give the people of this community a huge round of applause for the tremendous generosity you showed us on Oct. 10 in front of Pick 'n Save and Walmart. With your combined efforts, we collected enough food to supply approximately three months of food to the two village pantries, the Kitchen Kupboard inside Mt. Olive Church and the Mukwonago Food Pantry on Eagle Lake Avenue. We also collected over $1,300 in cash, of which the Lions will match every cent and give to each of the pantries to use as they see fit.

This opportunity was a vehicle for which you could make a difference. With the economy the way it is and winter soon approaching, you have made a difference in the lives of those who need our help. So, on behalf of the Mukwonago Lions, a big hearty thank you! We'd also like to thank the Print, Pack and Ship Center of Mukwonago for their generous donation and assistance on very short notice. And special thanks go out to Pick 'n Save and Walmart for allowing us to set up camp in front of their stores.

Mukwonago

No duplication needed

To the editor,

The Village of Mukwonago Police Department maintains its own VHF (very high frequency) radio communication system, including radio transmission towers. The system was first started in 1979 and expanded based on analog technologies and wideband radio channels.

The VHF radio subspectrum in use by the village has become increasingly crowded. Newer and digital technologies make possible more efficient use of these radio airwaves. Therefore, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has mandated that all agencies using legacy radio systems like the village's migrate to newer narrowband radio channels that will free up room for other users of these airwaves. The FCC deadline to make the change is the end of 2012.

The village has two choices:

1. Replace and upgrade all village VHF radios and the entire supporting VHF radio infrastructure before the end of 2012.

2. Do not replace and upgrade the current police VHF radio system and instead switch to the Waukesha County 800-mhz radio system.

I believe a switch to Waukesha County's radio system would better protect both the safety and pocketbooks of village residents.

The village has been paying for two separate radio systems, its own and a share of Waukesha County's. The Mukwonago Fire Department uses the Waukesha County radio system exclusively, and the Village Dispatch Center uses both systems.

As the village has already paid the up-front costs to join the county's radio system, there would be relatively little added cost for the village police to also use it. Then the village could eliminate the expense of retooling its second, duplicative radio system for the police.

Safety is also at issue. Despite State of Wisconsin emergency planning designating our area for 800-mhz radio, the village police remain a VHF island in a sea of 800 mhz. Incompatible village radios could hamper communication with other public safety agencies in the event the village experiences a serious or widespread emergency requiring outside help.

A new police radio system presents an opportunity to meet current and future operational and budget needs. Now is the time for the village trustees to evaluate, determine costs and plan in advance.
