Obey traffic laws or face the consequences
To the editor,
The Village of Mukwonago Police Department has received a $20,000 speed-enforcement grant for 2012 from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, Bureau of Transportation Safety.
Through this grant, village officers will work in groups in specific (and changing) areas to enforce speeding, aggressive driving, drunken driving, seat belt and equipment violations throughout specific time periods for the remainder of 2011 and 2012.
The provided grant funds are for police officer overtime and traffic safety-related equipment. The Village of Mukwonago received a similar grant for the 2010 and 2011 year and recorded an 8-percent reduction in car crashes. Although this is positive, we are striving for less (or no) motor vehicle crashes in our community.
The economic losses due to crashes in Mukwonago (and everywhere in our nation) are staggering.
Our patrol staff understands the many instances of tailgating, speeding, aggressive driving and unsafe maneuvers that motorists encounter daily from poor and aggressive drivers. We are going to step up efforts to change this behavior through the very unpopular traffic citation. The goal is not more tickets, it is to change that bad driving behavior.
We prefer motorists to slow down, drive patiently and defensively, and if you encounter an individual tailgating you (the catalyst to many road rage incidents) merely pull over or turn off and let the aggressive driver pass. It is simply not worth it, and chances are they have had many traffic encounters with law enforcement and will most likely (and hopefully) encounter more officers before hurting somebody else or themselves.
Over the upcoming holiday periods (and throughout the year) we want every person to have a safe and enjoyable time. Too many times, through needless crashes, people end up in the hospital, or worse yet, the funeral home. Officers recognize this and it is a great motivator to change the bad driving behaviors. So remember, please slow down and drive safely; if you don't, chances are you will see flashing blue and red lights in your rear view mirror.

A community with talent
To the editor,
In case you missed it, this past weekend I need to share something that happened in Mukwonago this weekend. We have to realize Mukwonago is loaded with talent.
Saturday morning at 11 a.m. at Pick 'n Save meat department the Mukwonago orchestra treated shoppers to their "flash mob" Christmas songs. Students milled around Pick 'n Save with their instruments and "mobbed" the meat area and played Christmas music under the direction of Mukwonago High School orchestra director Roxanne Carloni.
Friday and Saturday nights at Mukwonago High School, the Mukwonago Village Players, Mukwonago Drama Department and Grace Notes Community Orchestra joined their talents to perform Irving Berlin's "White Christmas" at Mukwonago High School.
The audience at "White Christmas" loved the show. One attendee walked in and saw the orchestra pit and exclaimed, "Mukwonago Village Players have their own orchestra?" I told her Mukwonago has their own orchestra called Grace Notes. She then said, "Mukwonago has their own orchestra; Racine is much bigger and they don't have an orchestra."
The Mukwonago High School Drama Department performs shows and "sell-out, reserved seating" musicals every year. Mukwonago High School has a great orchestra and band. One of the choir groups from the high school was selected to sing with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra at Uihlein Hall at the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts a week ago.
For a community the size of Mukwonago, we are rich in talent, and we should take the time to enjoy the talented students and adults in the community.
Now for my cheap plug: This Friday through Saturday at Mukwonago High School, the Mukwonago Village Players, Mukwonago High School Drama Department and Grace Notes will once again join forces for the final three shows of "White Christmas." I promise if you come you will be amazed with the talent within and recruited into our community. Tickets can be purchased at Miller Pharmacy, Espresso Love Coffee at Hidden Cafe. Tickets can also be purchased online through our website at mukwonagovillageplayers.org or call (262) 470-4786.

Thank you for the effort
To the editor,
A quick note to heap praise on Shawn McNulty and teachers for taking the initiative to engage students. In the last month or so, my high school children have received handwritten postcards from one of their teachers to point out positives about them as students. These notes are more than empty, feel-good statements. Rather, these teachers specifically highlighted behaviors and accomplishments as a way to reinforce what they expect and what the student can achieve.
As someone who leads a professional communications firm, I assure you this is a worthwhile investment. A simple note of thank you goes a long way in promoting positive outcomes. Keep up the great work and the innovative thinking.

We are home
To the editor,
The building is done and we open for business. The library is back where it started, but in a beautiful and functional building that will serve our community for decades.
Our hours are the same, our great staff is the same, but we'll be able to do nearly everything else better and faster. Stop in and share our happiness over having a new home. The time at our temporary home on Main Street was a good one, but we are all very happy to be back on the corner of Washington and Division streets.
Our move went well, thanks to a great moving team and a great staff. But also thanks to some great volunteers who helped load us up and then checked to make sure everything was in the right place at the new building. Thank you to all who helped. Also, a big thank-you to everyone who visited us during Midnight Magic and helped make the open house and Friends of the Library bake sale and raffle a huge success.

Sacrifice remembered
and respected
To the editor,
I highly praise the dedication of the Library Board - I was not a supporter of the library expansion and the approximately $100 per year burden it purportedly will cost each average household in Mukwonago over the forthcoming years.
It should be important for us, as beneficiaries and as an appreciative community, to honor "the founder of the feast" when we discuss the library.
The library building was founded by a profoundly committed couple in Mukwonago named Floyd and Jesse McKenzie. Jesse was the head librarian for 50 years and the library's collection grew from 300 to 8,000 volumes.
The couple saved for years to fulfill their gift to Mukwonago of a library in July 1961. The couple had no children, yet sacrificed much, and often, for many Mukwonago people. They devoted their lives to helping Mukwonago.
I hope the library will properly display respect to these founders as an inspiration to us and our future generations.
The accurate detail on this in-depth story is (or was) in the library records.
