Mukwonago out-muscles KM
The first drive of the game pretty much told the story of the night.
Visiting Mukwonago took the ball 80 yards in 15 plays on the very first possession of the game, scored a touchdown on an 8-yard run by senior running back Daniel Timmers and then added a 2-point conversion on a run by Jason Strickler to grab a quick 8-0 lead.
The Indians took a 15-0 edge at halftime, never looked back and eventually grabbed an 18-3 Classic 8 Conference victory over Kettle Moraine on Friday.
The win locked up a WIAA playoff berth for the Indians, who moved to 4-1 in league play with two games left. Mukwonago is now 4-2 overall.
For Kettle Moraine, the playoff situation is now dire. KM fell to 2-3 in league games and now must win its final two starts of the season, against Muskego and Catholic Memorial, to make the playoffs. The Lasers fell to 2-4 overall.
KM’s only points of the night came on a 22-yard field goal by Austin Wolf in the third quarter. The only points Mukwonago scored in the second half was a 22-yard field goal by Timmers.
The key for Mukwonago was their ball control in the opening half. The Indians, led by strong defensive performances from Nathan Tanguay, Dominic Cizauskas, Austin Krueger and Mayson Madden, held KM to just 17 offensive plays, four first downs and only 68 total yards.
At the same time, Mukwonago reeled off 37 plays, 11 first downs and 179 total yards.
“I just told the guys, our best defense is our offense,” said first-year coach Clay Iverson of Mukwonago. “That first offensive series came against an awfully good, well-coached football team. We knew our offense would have to keep them off the field. You don’t want to give a team with that many offensive weapons a lot of opportunities. Our offense did a good job of controlling the first half. That helped us a lot tonight.”
After scoring on that first series, Mukwonago got its second TD of the night on its third possession, but got a little luck on the play. This time they marched 63 yards in 11 plays, getting the touchdown when senior guard Thomas Stingl recovered Aaron Nixon's fumble in the end zone.
In the second half, KM had the ball four times on their five possessions in Mukwonago territory but could only muster up one field.
“We just couldn’t convert on offense,” KM coach Darnell Wiltz said. “We have to convert our chances. We practice that all week. We have to get it done in games.”
