MHS girls keep Crusaders at bay

Catholic Memorial staged a late threat, but Mukwonago kept its chase for first place in the Classic 8 Conference intact with a 52-44 victory over the Crusaders on Friday.

The Indians jumped out to a 20-7 lead through the first quarter, and Memorial couldn't fully recover.

"We came out strong, which we hadn't done in the past couple games," MHS coach Staci Butalla said. "They definitely fought hard and got back into the game; we would go up by a few more, and they would come back. They're not a bad team; they're definitely doing a lot better this year than people in the conference perceive them."

Emily Romdenne and Shannon Perez each contributed 13 points in the victory over the Crusaders.

Rematch brewing

Playing on their home floor against league foe Milwaukee Pius on Dec. 22, the Indians fell flat by a 50-32 score and stumbled out of first place in the Classic 8 standings. It was the first varsity loss in 30 regular season contests, and it wasn't pretty.

"Last year, being undefeated, people expect a lot of you," Butalla said. "It's cool that this year, Pius is the team we have to beat rather than us being the team to beat. The roles are kind of reversed."

Thanks to six straight wins, the Indians (12-2 overall, 7-1 in Classic 8, pending Tuesday's game) enter Friday's rematch right on par with Pius (13-3, 7-1), which lost a surprise game to Kettle Moraine (without leading scorer Sam Pfeifer) earlier this year.

"We're thinking about mixing it up a little bit and not necessarily letting them see full-court man-to-man the entire game," Butalla said.

Friday's game at Pius tips at 7:30 p.m.
