Blawat tearing up asphalt at Slinger

Eagle resident leading the point standings at Slinger

Maybe there should be a race track at Kettle Moraine High School.

Former Lasers have been tearing up the asphalt at Slinger Super Speedway, billed as the World's Fastest Quarter Mile Oval. After a first-week accident, Eagle resident Chris Blawat regained his wits and the points lead in the Late Models, 20 points ahead of fellow KM grad Rob Braun, a resident of Wales.

The 1997 graduate Blawat has family support when it comes to hitting the high-banked turns at Slinger. Father Tom is part of his crew, along with Andy Millikin, Dan Millinkin and fellow KM grads Dan Wood and Ryan Zielski. The latter races Late Models at Jefferson Speedway on Saturday but still has time to take a different role Sundays for Blawat.

"After that rough first night where I crashed, we've picked it up and we've been clicking pretty much every week," Blawat said. "I've got a great crew that really helps get the car going. They're all a big help I couldn't run without them."

Asked if there's a rivalry with Braun, he laughed.

"I wouldn't call it a rivalry. We're good friends, but when it's time to race, you know Rob's going to be running right next to you," Blawat said. "We're competitive and we always want to win. I leave it at that."

Blawat rides with backing from Jeff Horwath Builder's in Hartland and Mander Collision and Glass from Waukesha.

"They're all a big help; I couldn't run without them," Blawat said.

Blawat, a 10-year veteran at Slinger, won the Late Models points championship last year, and his short-term goal seems obvious.

"It would be awesome to repeat," Blawat said. "We've got to have a really good second half to stay on top, but I'm confident in my team. We're having fun and we'll just have to see what happens."

Running mates

Braun competes in Late Models, one below the top classification at Slinger Speedway on a given night.

Super Late Models - Considered "fastest short track cars in the world," with V-8 engines that navigate the high banks at the Speedway. Laps on the quarter-mile track can be turned in 11 seconds.

Late Models - Same chassis, body, fuel cell and bolt parts as Super Late Models but less expensive engines, shocks, tires and brakes. "Little Brother" cars of Super Lates can turn a lap in 12 seconds.

Midwest Sportsman - Division for drivers learning basic rules with intent to compete in Super Late Models. Twelve second laps.

Figure Eights - One race per night along figure-eight pattern of track. Collisions aplenty in entertaining race, using old racecars and typical American cars.

Thunderstocks - Affordable race cars in a division that prepares drivers for other divisions. No model of car newer than 1992, and cars upgraded for safety.

Slinger Bees - Basic four-cylinder cars with only slight modifications for safety, good for the newest of beginners.

Guest Cars - A six-lap competition with nominal entry fee to race against other novice racers.
