Arrowhead still has Indians' number

The annual clash of titans with Arrowhead once again didn't go as Mukwonago hoped Friday. The Indians hope the script remains identical to last year's, however.

When the two teams square off in the Classic 8 Conference tournament this weekend, MHS will look to defend its title - one procured last year after Arrowhead won the regular-season dual between the two schools. Heavyweight Tyler Ladwig, needing bonus points in the final match against Arrowhead's Austin Gatchel, instead fell by a 12-7 count, and the Warhawks escaped with a 32-25 decision.

"It's a spot where he's trying to get a fall, and he put himself in danger (as a result)," MHS coach Jon Wierzbicki said of the clinching bout. "It was 7-7 with 12 seconds left. I told him just to work for overtime and hope for a pin there, which is sort of like a Hail Mary pass in football, but then Gatchel shot in."

Arrowhead senior Jake Nelson, a wrestler battling injuries all season, scored a 7-6 win over Joe Mattson at 145 pounds to secure perhaps the biggest win of the day. Mattson, ranked third in the state, nearly delivered a match-turning takedown in the final seconds, but time expired before he could finish the move.

Kirk Zylke battled Arrowhead's Mitch Berenz in a 1-0 bout until the final seconds at 152, when Berenz threw Zylke to his back and took a 6-0 win.

"It wasn't the outcome we wanted, but I think our guys battled hard," Wierzbicki said. "I know it's on the line Saturday as far as the league championship. We have to take it moment by moment to sharpen up for Saturday. We had some good efforts and matches that were close. It's getting down to the end where both teams are firming up."

Both teams had just one pin each, with Jacob Vadnais (113) earning the Indians' fall. Other winners were Brandon Schallock (106), Hank Mattson (132), Tyler Aprahamian (160, by forfeit), Joe Quaglieri (182) and Luke Belich (220, major decision).

JVs win title

With 219.5 points, Mukwonago blew away the 15-team field at the Classic 8/Greater Metro JV Conference Tournament on Saturday. West Allis Central (154) was a distant second.

Flight champions were Darius Schwartz (126), Tyler Wozny (160), Tony McLintock (160B), Mitch Geisler (182) and Charlie Younger (285).

Andrew Williams took second at 138, as did Mitch Major at 170.
