Grapplers win Classic 8 title
Arrowhead won most of the battles, but Mukwonago won the war.
Despite eight conference champions in 14 flights for the rival Warhawks, it was the Indians who emerged with the Classic 8 Conference wrestling championship Saturday at Waukesha South. For the third time in four years, MHS took the crown after the Warhawks won the regular-season dual between the two programs.
The Indians won by a razor-thin margin, 267.5 to 264, and needed heavyweight Tyler Ladwig to win his final match of the day for the flight title. Ladwig obliged with a pin of South's Brock Milkent in 3:05.
"Ladwig went out thinking he needed to pin," said coach Jon Wierzbicki, reflecting on circumstances that were similar to Ladwig's match with Arrowhead's Austin Gatchel in the dual meet just more than a week earlier. Ladwig went for the pin in that case and wound up losing the decision, though he did beat Gatchel in the semifinal at the tourney.
"He pressed a little bit against Gatchel, and (when we discovered he only needed the win against Milkent), I was yelling for him to relax. He was losing, 2-1, but literally as the words came out of my mouth, he turned the guy to his back and got the pin. It was really good for us to have things take a turn with a lot of near misses this year and a tough schedule. To have all those things go our way was pretty special."
Mukwonago came away with five champions but al so made the most of bonus points to help bypass AHS in the final standings. Among the winners were Jake Vadnais at 113 pounds, Hank Mattson at 132, Kirk Zylke at 145, Luke Belich at 220 and Ladwig.
But the Indians took top three finishes at 13 of 14 flights. Taking seconds were Brandon Schallock (106), Tommy Kolasinski (126), Joe Mattson (138) and Joe Quaglieri (182).
Thirds went to Darius Schwartz (120), Alex Kleinschmidt (152), Dave Unger (160) and Jared Schmidt (170).
Schallock rallied from four points down in the semifinal to reach the final, Vadnais earned a notch in his belt as a senior after starting the sport of wrestling in eighth grade, and Schwartz showed well for a wrestler who just started the sport last year.
"He really just wanted to be an MMA fighter, and 15 months into his wrestling career, he took third," Wierzbicki said of Schwartz.
Quaglieri fell in overtime in the finals, 2-0, falling just short of securing a clinching takedown in the extra session.
The team has a tough test in Saturday's regional at Whitnall, needing to win the tourney and defeat the likes of Burlington, Fort Atkinson and Muskego to claim a spot in Tuesday's team sectional.
