Boys hockey

KM skaters win two more games

The Kettle Moraine/Mukwonago/Oconomowoc varsity boys hockey team remained red-hot last Friday and Saturday.

Taking part in the Groundhog Tournament at both Oregon and Sun Prairie, the Lasers scored a pair of narrow victories to win the tournament and improve to 18-3 on the season.

The Lasers have now won nine of their last 10 games. KM/MHS/OHS will return to the ice on Saturday when they host Catholic Memorial/Pius at the Naga-Waukee Ice Arena at 7 p.m. A win in that game would clinch the outright Classic 8 Conference championship for the Lasers.

"It was nice to finally win a tournament championship," said KM coach John Brymer. "We had played in a couple of tournaments earlier in the season and finished second. So the boys felt good about finally winning one of these things."

On Friday, playing against Monona Grove (5-12) at Oregon, the Lasers rallied for four goals in the final period to score a come-from-behind 5-4 victory.

The next night, playing against host Sun Prairie, the Lasers needed double overtime to defeat the Cardinals, 3-2.

Junior forward Greg Simandl fired in two goals while junior Zach Thoreson, senior Justin Yute and senior Mitch Ellena added one goal each against Monona Grove.

Ellena, who added three assists, had one of his best games of the year for the Lasers. Getting credit for single assists were Sam Hart, Simandl, Matt Sherry, Jake Erdman and Yute.

"We didn't play our best hockey in the first two period against Monona Grove, but the good thing is we rallied in the final period to win the game," Brymer said. "We struggled early in that game but had enough left in the third period to win it."

KM, ranked 13th in last week's state poll, defeated Sun Prairie (13-7-1) behind another solid game from Ellena, who scored two of his team's three goals. Yute had the game winner in double OT. Simandl finished with three assists and Michael DelVecchio had two assists. Goalie Quinn Disrud saved 39 of 41 shots.

"It was nice to get a couple of wins with the tournament coming up," Brymer said. "We still have a couple of games left in the regular season, but this was a nice way to keep us moving forward."

ROCKIN' IT - Fred Eide, left, and his daughter Ashley, of Eide Painting and Sandblasting, use spray guns to paint the individual rock shapes on the underside of the I-94 overpass at Highway P in Oconomowoc Wednesday, May 16. Each "rock" is painted individually and then speckled with black paint to make it look like granite.
