Lasers take second at Hayward

Hockey team splits, moves to 15-3 on the season

The Kettle Moraine/Mukwonago/Oconomowoc varsity boys hockey team came away with a second-place finish t in the Hayward Tournament last Friday and Saturday.

After defeating host Hayward in the opener Friday, 6-0, the Lasers met Rice Lake in the finals on Saturday and suffered a 5-3 defeat. The split moved the KM/MHS/OHS record to 15-3 on the season. The Lasers are idle this week.

"For the most part, we had a very good tournament," said Lasers coach John Brymer. "We got behind early against Rice Lake, and that hurt us. We did play two very good periods in the second and third, but we just came up a little short. It was a good experience for the kids. We got to get away and bond a little, plus we got the chance to play some teams we never see."

In the championship game, Rice Lake burned the Lasers with two goals in the first 3:05 of the game. Rice Lake led 3-1 after the first period.

KM/MHS/OHS did cut the deficit to 3-2 after two periods and 4-3 late in the third period but then got called for a penalty in the final four minutes, and Rice Lake scored on a power play to put the game away.

"That last penalty call hurt us," Brymer said. "We had done a great job of getting back into the game, and the momentum was shifting our way, and then the penalty call came and they scored. Without that call, we might have been able to tie the game."

The Lasers got goals from Mitch Ellena, Michael Del Vecchio and Greg Simandl. Getting assists on those goals were Simandl (2), Jimmie Rice, Ellena and Del Vecchio.

Goalie Quinn Disrud of the Lasers turned back 36 of 41 shots. KM/Mukwonago/OHS finished the game with 28 shots on goal.

Big win over Hayward

On Friday night, the Lasers exploded for a 6-0 win over Hayward. The winners finished the game with 36 shots on goal, 15 more than Hayward.

Junior Austin Freeman fired in two goals to lead the Lasers and Simandl, Del Vecchio, Jake Erdman and Justin Yute added scores. Collecting assists were Mitch Ellena, Del Vecchio, Yute, Brock Ellena, Erdman (2), Sam Hart and Simandl.

"We got off to a good start against a pretty good Hayward team," Brymer said. "A bunch of guys scored or had assists for us. It was a nice team win."

Disrud was the winning goalie.

For the year, Del Vecchio now leads the Lasers in scoring with 28 points. Other top scorers are Simandl with 27 points, Yute 26, Freeman 18 and Erdman 15. Disrud's save percentage is .921.
