Straszewski shines at Highlander Invite
Mukwonago/Kettle Moraine gymnast Natalie Straszewski won or tied for first in two events and took home first place in the all-around at 36.575 when she competed at the Homestead Highlander Invite on Saturday in Mequon.
Straszewski won the uneven bars (9.175) and tied for first place on the balance beam (9.3). She also won three events and the all-around on Thursday at a three-team gathering in Waukesha.
She took fifth on the vault at the Highlander with an 8.85 and scored 9.25 on floor. The squad took second among 11 teams with a 141.475 score, the team's highest mark since last year's sectional. Sheboygan won with 141.725. Arrowhead took third at 139.2.
Taylor Rozman tied for first on beam with Straszewski and Calie Kaiser of Sheboygan, and Taylor Weis took second on the bars with a 9.15. Amanda Ward placed fifth on bars.
"The beam performances really helped," coach Margie Canfield said. "We need bigger vaults to really be competitive in bigger meets, and we are working on this as well as more bonus points in the floor exercise. We still have room to improve, which is very encouraging."
Canfield hopes to get Megan Kowalczyk back from injury soon.
The Indians took first place over Waukesha and Kenosha on Thursday, posting a 139.325. Straszewski won the vault, beam and bars and took second on floor. Weis placed second on bars, third on beam and third in the all-around, and Ward took third on floor.
Canfield said the team pulled together after the loss of Haley Yager to an ACL tear.
