Three MHS wrestlers perfect at Zelinski meet

Wagner, Belich, Ladwig all go 5-0

Mukwonago's state-ranked varsity wrestling team ran into some outstanding competition last Saturday at the Zelinski Memorial Duals at Whitnall High School and the Indians more than held their own against some of the top teams in the state.

Mukwonago, ranked No. 8 in the state, wrestled five matches in the day-long tournament and emerged with a solid 3-2 record.

In Group A, which featured four teams ranked in the top 11 spots in last week's state poll, No. 3-ranked Merrill won the team title with a 5-0 mark. They were followed by 11th-ranked West Allis Central at 4-1, Mukwonago at 3-2 and fifth-ranked Hartford at 2-3.

"How many tournaments do you go to and there are five teams ranked in the top 10 or 11 spots in the state," Mukwonago coach Jon Wierzbicki said. "Merrill just might be the best team in the state. I haven't seen Kaukauna but Merrill is very good. I thought our kids did a very good job all day long."

MHS opened the tournament by whipping Kenosha Bradford, 64-9. The Indians followed that up with an easy 57-6 win over Pewaukee. Mukwonago then made it three straight wins by trouncing Hartford, 58-9.

Sporting a 3-0 mark, Mukwonago suffered a narrow 36-31 loss to West Allis Central before closing out the day by absorbing a 39-15 setback to powerful Merrill.

In the loss to Merrill, Mukwonago got victories from Luke Belich at 220, Tyler Ladwig at 285, Jake Vadnais at 113, Hank Mattson at 132 and Sam Wagner at 138.

"We got off to a great start with three wins and then lost a tough match to Central," Wierzbicki said. "That match could have gone either way. They've got a good team. It was close right from the start."

Three Mukwonago wrestlers finished the day with perfect 5-0 records. Those grapplers were Wagner, Belich and Ladwig.

Four other Indians finished the meet with 4-1 records. That list included Vadnais, Hank Mattson, Joe Mattson at 145 and Joe Quaglieri at 182.

Kirk Zylke was 3-0 for the day before being forced off the mat with an injury.

"The competition was tough all day," Wierzbicki said. "I thought we had our best performance against Pewaukee. But we also wrestled well against Central and Merrill. Our kids fought hard all day. Brandon Schallock at 106 didn't win as many matches as some of the other guys, but he turned in a scrappy effort all day long. He gives it everything he has in every match. It was a good day for all of the guys."
