Tuttle takes her best shot twice for girls
Full-court heave, buzzer-beater helps Mukwonago win
It's hard to imagine that burying a buzzer-beating game winner would only be the second most amazing shot of Jenny Tuttle's evening.
The junior guard's heave from three-quarters court at the end of the third quarter was a big one for the Mukwonago girls basketball team against Catholic Memorial on Friday, tying the game and setting the stage for a game-winning basket just less than 8 minutes later. Mukwonago stunned Catholic Memorial, 52-51, when Tuttle took a handoff after an inbound with nine seconds left and drove for the winning shot.
"She got bumped off her track, but they didn't call a foul, so she shot an off-balance 12-footer from inside the line and off the backboard," said MHS coach Todd Frohwirth.
What followed was a bit of confusion, when CMH was able to put together a possession and a shot that was swatted out of bounds by Kendall Martenet with one second left. The clock hadn't started on the sequence leading into Mukwonago's basket, and officials convened and agreed the game was over at that point.
Tuttle, who finished with 17 points, said the final shot wasn't going to be the one she remembered most.
"The full-court shot was definitely very memorable," she said. "I probably would never be able to do that again; it was so cool. It gave us a giant confidence boost. We were so fired up going into the fourth quarter; we came out really strong. We wanted to win that game so bad (to move into) third in conference."
Frohwirth said Tuttle's shot almost hit the ceiling after a quick inbound with two seconds left in the third quarter. She took one dribble from the free throw line and almost swished the shot on the other end. Instead of being down by three points, the Indians had tied the score.
"I kind of had a weird feeling that it was going to go in," Tuttle said.
Allison Mueller scored 23 points to lead CMH, and Katie Mueller hit a 3-pointer with 15 seconds left to play in regulation that gave her team the 1-point lead going into the final moments.
Now at 5-5, Mukwonago and Kettle Moraine are tied for third in conference, behind state-ranked powers Milwaukee Pius and Arrowhead, tied for the league lead at 9-1.
"This year has been the best so far," Tuttle said. "Two years ago, I was a little freshman with none of my friends on the team. Last year was a struggle to get everybody together. This year is turning out really good. I'm excited for next year because we're going to be even better. We have a lot of talent."
Mukwonago 49, Racine Park 40
The Indians outscored the non-conference foe Park in the fourth quarter, 12-5, for a win last Thursday.
Frohwirth lauded Martenet, who had 10 rebounds against Memorial and 15 points against Park.
"She's a Division 1 player who didn't have good numbers in the conference last season but had a great AAU season this summer," Frohwirth said. "She's been playing very good basketball. She does so much more than scoring…she's a great defender, great at rebounding."
