Dropping temps and dry

Our Hartland area weather forecaster has this weather prediction for the week ahead.

For Oct. 21-27

After a wet spring and early summer it's been a dry October, and the rest of the month should also remain dry. October started out warm and sunny, more than the average. But I think the tide will turn for winter, and we'll have above-normal precipitation. That means we'll have above-average snow.

When rain heads toward us, it evaporates as it nears in the dry air. The reason for this is the jet stream, which steers the storms, is north of us this whole month. Also, storms that hit the Pacific Northwest are weak, and by the time they get to us they're ringed out - a byproduct of La Nina in the oceans.

With a good growing year, there are many huge leaf piles around, and this time of the year kids play in those leaf piles by curbs, so watch out for kids playing in those piles.

The colors of leaves this year are nothing short of spectacular, and there are lots of ducks and geese still around. It's early for them. Soon they'll form flocks and fly in that traditional V shape. They should migrate south for the winter as soon as they form flocks. When they go, snow is right behind them.

Our sunshine was way up this year. The available sunshine is below 11 hours and is dropping fast at 3 ½ minutes per day. The high temperature records are down in the low 80s, something you have to cherish this late in the season. With sunshine minutes going down, it doesn't have time to heat the air. But even temps in the 70s, with a low sun angle, feel warm this time of year. The sun is the same as March 1. Everything is three weeks ahead of schedule except temperatures and rainfall. Enjoy the nice weather we are having, because it should change soon.

We still haven't had frost or freeze yet. Our coldest night was down to 37 degrees, and the ground is holding its built-up heat. Don't expect the lakes to ice over soon. .

Temperatures

The highs may hit 70, but cool down late. Lows in the low 40s or upper 30s Normal high/low: 58/37 degrees.

Precipitation

Showers possible Saturday. It should be sunny and dry the other days. Rainfall potential: under 0.10 inch.

ROCKIN' IT - Fred Eide, left, and his daughter Ashley, of Eide Painting and Sandblasting, use spray guns to paint the individual rock shapes on the underside of the I-94 overpass at Highway P in Oconomowoc Wednesday, May 16. Each "rock" is painted individually and then speckled with black paint to make it look like granite.
